Collin Gillespie stuns NBA as Sixth Man of the Year contender with explosive bench performances for Suns

Date:

Collin Gillespie Emerges as Sixth Man of the Year Contender for Suns

Collin Gillespie is making waves in the NBA this season, especially after securing his first standard contract with the Phoenix Suns during the summer. With the team grappling with the absence of Jalen Green—who has played only one full game—Gillespie has stepped into a crucial role as the second ball-handler, right behind the star guard Devin Booker.

Impressive Bench Contributions

Gillespie’s impact is undeniable. In a standout performance against the Portland Trail Blazers, he scored a season-high 19 points, contributing significantly to the Suns’ 17-point victory. Over the first 15 games of the season, Gillespie has averaged 10.5 points while showcasing his shooting prowess with a 39.1% accuracy from beyond the arc. His all-around game is highlighted by 5.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and one steal in just 24.5 minutes per game.

Notably, Gillespie’s statistical achievements place him among the elite in the league. He ranks second in total assists off the bench with 77, third in 3-pointers made with 36, and is tied for 10th in steals with 15. Additionally, he sits 14th in overall points with 158, making a compelling case for Sixth Man of the Year honors as he continues to elevate his scoring.

Historic Company

Gillespie’s early-season performance has placed him in rarefied air, joining an exclusive club of players in NBA history. He is now one of just three players to accumulate 150 or more points, 75 or more assists, and 50 or more rebounds in the first 15 games of a season while coming off the bench. The other two players who achieved this remarkable feat are Russell Westbrook during the 2022-23 season and LaMelo Ball in 2020-21.

Players in NBA history with 150+ points, 75+ assists, and 50+ rebounds in their first 15 games of a season, off the bench:

Collin Gillespie (this season)
Russell Westbrook (2022-23)
LaMelo Ball (2020-21)

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Gillespie to see if he can maintain this momentum and further solidify his standing as a strong contender for the Sixth Man of the Year award. His contributions may not only define his career but also play a pivotal role in the Suns’ quest for success this season.
