Chet Holmgren shines as Thunder’s pivotal force in historic 21-1 start

The Oklahoma City Thunder are making waves this season, boasting one of the most impressive starts in NBA history with a remarkable 21-1 record. As the storylines unfold, the spotlight has frequently found its way to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the team’s formidable defensive prowess. Yet, amid the buzz, one name deserves a closer look: Chet Holmgren.

Holmgren’s Impact on the Thunder

Holmgren has played a crucial role in the Thunder’s early success, averaging 18.4 points and eight rebounds per game while leading the squad with 1.4 blocks. The 7-foot-1 standout is not just a defensive anchor; he’s also blossoming into an offensive weapon. His current averages reflect significant growth, with career highs in points, field goal percentage, and free throw percentage.

As the second-leading scorer on the team, trailing only Gilgeous-Alexander, Holmgren has shown that he can hold his own in the scoring department. In fact, he is currently shooting an impressive 56.1% from the field, ranking him twelfth in the NBA. Remarkably, only three players with a higher shooting percentage score more than this emerging star, illustrating his efficiency on the court.

A Leap in Free-Throw Shooting

Holmgren’s improvement extends beyond just field goals. His free-throw shooting has also surged to a career-best 81.4%, a significant jump from the 75.4% he achieved last season. This newfound proficiency at the charity stripe enhances his value as a scoring option and makes him a reliable contributor when the game is on the line.

In previous seasons, Holmgren often played third fiddle to Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams. However, with Williams sidelined for the first 19 games this season, Holmgren seized the opportunity to establish himself as a formidable second option. A standout moment came on October 25, when he erupted for 31 points on just 12 shots against the Atlanta Hawks, leading the Thunder to victory.

Consistency Amidst Team Dynamics

Now that Williams is back in the lineup, Holmgren’s role may shift, but his ability to step up remains critical. For instance, in a recent matchup against the Golden State Warriors, he delivered with a solid 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting, showcasing his capability to deliver when called upon.

As the Thunder continue their pursuit of a historic season, Holmgren’s efficiency and adaptability will be vital. With a bright future ahead, the young big man is proving to be an essential piece of the Thunder’s championship aspirations, solidifying his status as a secret weapon in their remarkable journey.
