Hornets Make Surprising Move by Waiving DJ Rodman

The Charlotte Hornets are in the midst of reshaping their roster as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season. In a notable decision, the franchise announced on Tuesday that they have waived DJ Rodman, the son of legendary NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman and brother to women’s soccer star Trinity Rodman.

Rodman’s Journey to Charlotte

DJ Rodman joined the Hornets during their training camp after going undrafted out of the University of Southern California in 2024. Last season, he showcased his skills in the G League, playing 25 games with the Maine Celtics, where he averaged 6.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. His performance during this period was a testament to his potential as a player, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to secure a spot on an NBA roster.

Summer League and Future Prospects

Rodman had his first opportunity to impress the Hornets this summer during the NBA Summer League, where he aimed to showcase his versatility as a 6-foot-6 combo guard. His background, which includes college stints at Washington State and USC, contributed to a sense of anticipation among fans and analysts alike. Despite his length and skill set, Rodman finds himself among the many players navigating the complexities of roster cuts as teams finalize their lineups.

What’s Next for Rodman?

As the dust settles on this decision, the most probable scenario for Rodman is a return to the G League, potentially joining the Hornets’ affiliate team, the Greensboro Swarm. However, there remains a chance that another NBA team might claim him off waivers, or he could explore other opportunities once he clears the waivers.

For now, the spotlight shifts away from Charlotte’s roster, as Rodman will not be part of the Hornets’ plans when the season opens, a move that, while surprising to some, reflects the competitive nature of the league and the ongoing pursuit of roster optimization.

Other NBA News

The Hornets are not the only team making headlines. Recent injury updates and player performances across the league are also capturing attention, including Nikola Topic’s surprising recovery timeline and Brandon Ingram’s seamless integration into the Raptors. As the NBA landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on the upcoming season.
