Ryan Kalkbrenner Powers Hornets to Victory Over Bucks
After enduring a tough stretch of three consecutive losses, the Charlotte Hornets welcomed the Milwaukee Bucks to their home court, albeit without their star player, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Meanwhile, LaMelo Ball sat out for the fifth straight game, although he did practice with the Greensboro Swarm just the day before.
Hornets’ Fiery Start
From the tip-off, the Hornets ignited their offense, scoring over 30 points in the first quarter for the tenth time in their first eleven games this season. The catalyst for this explosive start was rookie Ryan Kalkbrenner, who showcased his “Dad Strength” with a solid nine points in the opening frame.
As the game transitioned from the first to the second quarter, Charlotte launched a decisive 16-3 run. Former Buck Pat Connaughton was instrumental during this stretch, hitting two three-pointers and finishing the night with a season-high 11 points, shooting 4-of-6 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc.
Navigating the Third Quarter Challenge
The momentum shifted slightly in the third quarter as the Hornets watched their once-comfortable 19-point lead dwindle down to just nine. Head Coach Charles Lee had advised caution in response to such situations, and the Hornets took heed. Instead of panicking, they executed a strategic run that ballooned their advantage back to 22 points in the fourth quarter, ultimately sealing their first victory since November 2nd with a final score of 111-100.
Kalkbrenner’s Impressive Performance
Kalkbrenner not only celebrated the team’s win but also embraced his new role as a father, channeling his energy into a standout performance. He finished with a season-high 17 points, going a flawless 8-for-8 from the field, while contributing nine rebounds, a steal, and three blocks.
The Hornets’ center rotation, which had raised questions heading into the season, has quickly evolved into a strength. Kalkbrenner currently ranks fifth on NBA.com’s Rookie Ladder, boasting averages of 9.2 points and an impressive 80.8% shooting from the floor. Alongside him, Moussa Diabate also made significant contributions, recording seven points and 13 rebounds, with eight of those coming on the offensive end.
As the Hornets savor their hard-fought win, they look ahead to a rematch against the Bucks on Friday night, eager to build on their newfound momentum.
