Celtics spark trade discussions: Anfernee Simons for Clippers’ Ivica Zubac in potential blockbuster

The Boston Celtics are once again at the center of trade speculation, with a compelling proposal involving Anfernee Simons and Ivica Zubac gaining traction. Few executives have demonstrated the knack for maximizing value at the center position quite like Brad Stevens. His ability to adapt has been evident since his coaching days, when he led a resilient Eastern Conference No. 3 seed featuring a mix of talents like Daniel Theis, Grant Williams, and Enes Freedom. Stevens has consistently shown an aptitude for assembling a competent frontcourt, whether by acquiring the right individual or orchestrating a strategic platoon.

Stevens’ Proven Track Record

The Celtics’ recent championship run in 2024 can be attributed to a series of savvy moves, notably the trade for Kristaps Porzingis. However, it was Stevens’ earlier acquisition of Al Horford and his decision to retain Luke Kornet that solidified a formidable rotation. These multiple options at the center position allowed for a dynamic and versatile lineup filled with switchable wings capable of scoring from anywhere on the court.

This season, after parting ways with Horford and Kornet, the Celtics have turned to more budget-friendly options at the five spot. Neemias Queta and Luka Garza have emerged as reliable contributors within the center rotation, while Jordan Walsh and Josh Minott have bolstered the glass at the four. Queta, in particular, has been impressive, averaging over 10 points and eight rebounds per game. Beyond the numbers, he has made significant strides in his overall play, becoming a proficient screener and a more effective defensive presence in the post.

Queta’s Growth and Limitations

Queta’s development has earned him a spot in the rotation, yet there are concerns about overextending him. His average of three fouls per game poses a challenge, and while Garza has been a solid backup, he is best suited for a third-string role rather than stepping into a starting position following an injury.

The Celtics’ ideal scenario would involve Queta serving as a change-of-pace big. Although he is nearing the threshold of being a legitimate starter, the team’s aspirations for a second title in three seasons necessitate a more established option. Enter Ivica Zubac, the Los Angeles Clippers’ center, who presents an appealing solution.

Zubac as a Win-Now Player

Zubac is a player who embodies the “win-now” mentality. While he may not possess the same athleticism as Queta, his confidence in the post and all-around abilities elevate him as a more reliable option. The best part of this potential trade? Zubac could be attainable. Reports suggest that the Clippers are exploring interest in Anfernee Simons, particularly in light of their shifting backcourt following Chris Paul’s departure.

According to sources, Simons, who is in the final year of his contract, has drawn attention from Los Angeles in the past. If the Celtics can package a deal that includes Simons along with a few draft picks, it could set the stage for an intriguing conversation between the two franchises.

The Celtics’ Pivot Potential

Acquiring Zubac would significantly enhance the Celtics’ frontcourt depth, creating a formidable one-two punch at the center position alongside Queta. With the ability to contribute in various ways, Zubac would complement the Celtics’ established perimeter shooting. Last season, the team set records for three-point attempts and makes, a trend that is likely to continue this year with the majority of their sharpshooters returning.

As the Celtics navigate these trade discussions, the balance between building for the future and maximizing the present will be crucial. The prospect of adding a player of Zubac’s caliber could prove pivotal in their quest for championship glory.
