Brooklyn Nets meltdown as Rockets crush Durant’s return to Barclays with 120-96 shocker

Nets Struggle in Durant’s Return as Rockets Roll to a 120-96 Victory

The Brooklyn Nets faced a tough start to 2026, missing three key starters, including Michael Porter Jr. This absence was felt deeply as they fell to the Houston Rockets by a score of 120-96 during Kevin Durant’s third return to Barclays Center. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation, but the Nets’ game plan quickly became evident.

Defensive Strategy Falls Short

From the opening moments, it was clear that the Nets aimed to contain Durant by employing double teams, seeking to limit his scoring opportunities. However, the strategy backfired as Durant showcased one of his often-overlooked skills: his ability to distribute the ball effectively. Despite the defensive pressure, Durant managed to finish the game with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, along with 11 assists and five rebounds.

In reflecting on the performance, Nets coach Jordi Fernandez acknowledged the team’s struggles. “We couldn’t find our energy,” he stated. “We saw some positives defensively. We scrambled, tried to get the ball out of their hands. They’re pretty good, and even though we turned it over one less time, they scored 23 points off our turnovers. And that’s pretty bad because you should be less points than turnovers you have.” His analysis highlighted the need for improved ball security, noting that live-ball turnovers led to easy baskets for the Rockets.

Rookies Step Up, But Room for Growth Remains

In a surprising move, Fernandez opted to start rookies Danny Wolf and Drake Powell in place of Cam Thomas. While both players had their inaugural starts, Fernandez recognized the learning curve they face. “I trust that they’ll try to do the right things,” he remarked. “Their intentions have always been great. I need them to be aggressive. I need them to be more decisive. It’s just the little things. It’s a little bit of the growing pains.”

Fernandez acknowledged their efforts, stating, “I think they did an OK job. I know they can be much better, and that’s why my standards for all of them are always gonna be high, because we believe they can be special.” He expressed the need for improvement, particularly in a game where every contribution counts.

Offensive Efficiencies and Missed Opportunities

Wolf’s playmaking was deemed efficient, though Fernandez pointed out that the team needed to create more scoring opportunities. “Thirty 3s for us, it’s not good enough, so probably missed a few of them,” he noted, emphasizing the need for better shot selection and execution.

Additionally, Fernandez expressed a desire to see more from Cam Thomas and Nolan Traore, specifically urging Traore to focus on catch-and-shoot opportunities rather than pull-up shots. The emphasis on refining their offensive strategy was clear as the Nets look to bounce back from this disappointing outing.

In the end, the Rockets’ victory not only showcased their capabilities but also highlighted the challenges the Nets must overcome as they navigate a season filled with potential and the growing pains of a young roster.
