Brooklyn Nets coach blasts Egor Demin: “He must be better or lose minutes!”

Nets Coach Calls for Improvement from Egor Demin

The Brooklyn Nets have been showing signs of improvement lately, managing to win three of their last five games. Yet, in their recent matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, there was a missed opportunity for a road victory that could have shifted the team’s momentum. The Nets fell short in a 119-111 defeat, with starting point guard Egor Demin facing significant struggles.

Demin’s Struggles in Dallas

In just 18 minutes on the court, Demin managed to score only three points, hitting just 1-of-7 attempts from the field. His performance was further marred by a solitary assist paired with two turnovers, leading to a mere two minutes of play in the fourth quarter. While the young guard has showcased his long-range shooting ability, alleviating concerns about his perimeter effectiveness, his reluctance to penetrate the defense and attack the paint has become evident in the early stages of his career.

Coaching Concerns and Expectations

Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez did not hold back in his assessment of Demin’s performance. “I think he was trying to fix mistakes by trying to make things happen,” Fernandez explained. “This is not how you want to do things. I need him to play with better readiness and better physicality.” The coach emphasized that for Demin to maintain his role on the team, improvement is essential. “He’s got to be better. Otherwise, the minutes are going to go down, and somebody else will take advantage of that.”

Fernandez acknowledged Demin’s potential, noting that he has consistently shown he cares and responds to challenges. “He’s way better than what he performed tonight,” he added, indicating that the player possesses the talent to elevate his game.

The Path Forward for Demin

At only 19 years old, Demin carries the weight of expectation following his selection as the eighth overall pick in the draft. While he has demonstrated self-awareness regarding his areas for growth, the need for him to step beyond his comfort zone is paramount. Gaining real-time experience in attacking the basket is crucial for his development, as simply relying on the defense’s offerings won’t suffice in refining his all-around game.

The Nets find themselves in a rebuilding phase, lacking a true point guard aside from Demin. Though players like Nic Claxton, Danny Wolf, and Michael Porter Jr. have contributed to ball movement, the team still requires a dedicated floor general. This role becomes increasingly critical in tight game situations, such as the one faced against Dallas, where strategic playmaking can make all the difference.

For Demin, this is a pivotal moment in his young career. Embracing the challenge ahead will not only enhance his contributions to the Nets but also solidify his position as a key player in their future endeavors.
