Brandon Miller steps into leadership role as Hornets training camp kicks off

Brandon Miller is making waves at the start of Charlotte Hornets training camp, and the early signs are incredibly promising for the young forward. After undergoing wrist surgery in January, Miller, 22, appears fully recovered and ready to make a significant impact in what could be a breakout season.

Building on a strong foundation

Over his first 101 games in the NBA, the former Alabama standout has demonstrated remarkable potential, averaging 18.3 points per game. His impressive performance earned him a third-place finish in the NBA Rookie of the Year voting for the 2023-24 season. As the Hornets look to the future, there is an undeniable buzz surrounding Miller, with everyone in the organization singing his praises.

Jeff Peterson, the Hornets’ president of basketball operations, has even gone as far as to suggest that Miller possesses Hall of Fame potential. This sentiment is echoed beyond Charlotte’s walls; respected NBA writer David Thorpe recently indicated that the franchise should consider Miller as its primary focal point instead of LaMelo Ball.

Evolving into an alpha presence

Miller’s evolution into a leadership role has become a focal point during training camp, particularly noted by head coach Charles Lee. After the team’s first practice, Lee remarked on the noticeable changes in Miller’s demeanor and approach.

“I saw a little bit more alpha come out of him,” Lee shared. “There were moments today where his group was either up or down, and instead of taking a backseat, he rallied the troops, told them what he needed. He took the ball in his hands. He wanted to guard the best players.”

These observations highlight Miller’s growing confidence and assertiveness, qualities that are essential for a player aiming to lead a team. His ability to step up during pivotal moments and encourage his teammates speaks volumes about his readiness to take on a more significant role within the franchise.

Looking ahead

As training camp progresses, all eyes will be on Miller to see how he continues to develop. With the Hornets eager to carve out their identity, his performance could be crucial in shaping the team’s future. The excitement surrounding his potential is palpable, and if the recent training camp insights are any indication, Miller is poised to make a substantial mark in the upcoming season.
