Blazers part ways with Blake Hinson, setting stage for G League journey with Rip City Remix

The Portland Trail Blazers have made a significant roster move ahead of training camp, announcing the release of 25-year-old guard/forward Blake Hinson. This decision, confirmed on Friday, comes as the team prepares for the upcoming season.

Hinson’s Journey to the Blazers

Blake Hinson, a Florida native, has yet to make his mark in the NBA. His basketball journey began at Ole Miss, where he showcased his potential before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh. At Pitt, Hinson emerged as an All-ACC player, largely due to his impressive offensive skills that caught the attention of scouts. However, despite his college accolades, he went undrafted in 2024.

After the draft, Hinson signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Unfortunately, his stint in Los Angeles was short-lived, as he was released after just two months. Hinson quickly found a new home with the Golden State Warriors, but his time with them did not lead to any official NBA appearances either.

The Next Step: G League with Rip City Remix

As part of the Blazers’ strategy, it appears they plan to sign Hinson to an Exhibit 10 contract before waiving him. This maneuver sets the stage for Hinson to join the Rip City Remix in the G League, where he can continue to develop his skills and seek playing time.

Last season, Hinson demonstrated his shooting prowess by finishing third in the G League for three-pointers made, a statistic that underscores his offensive capabilities. Alongside Hinson, the Blazers are also expected to sign and waive Alex Reese, who has previous experience with the Remix.

The upcoming season presents a fresh opportunity for Hinson to showcase his talents in the G League, potentially paving the way for a future return to the NBA. The Blazers’ decision reflects a broader strategy to cultivate young talent and explore avenues for player development. As training camp approaches, all eyes will be on how these changes unfold within the organization.
