Alperen Sengun’s dazzling season locks him in as All-Star, draws comparisons to Nikola Jokic

Date:

Alperen Sengun’s All-Star Ascendance

Alperen Sengun is making waves this season, earning recognition as one of the league’s top 15 players. Esteemed analysts like Bill Simmons and Zach Lowe have placed him firmly within that elite group on The Ringer’s Top 100 list, and the general consensus seems to echo their sentiment. His performance this season has solidified his role as the heartbeat of the Houston Rockets’ offense, showcasing his skills as a playmaker and scorer.

Statistical Impact and Versatility

Leading the Rockets in assists with an impressive average of seven per game, Sengun has emerged as the team’s offensive linchpin in halfcourt situations. His ability to facilitate plays is complemented by his scoring prowess, as he averages 23 points per contest alongside 9.3 rebounds. Additionally, Sengun contributes defensively, recording 2.5 stocks per game, while shooting 49.4 percent from the field and 32.3 percent from beyond the arc.

Sengun’s presence has significantly bolstered Houston’s offensive rebounding efforts, helping the team secure a top ranking in that category. His three offensive boards per game place him 13th in the league, underscoring his tenacity on the glass.

All-Star Credentials and Comparisons

Recognized for his exceptional performance, Sengun has been labeled a lock for the upcoming All-Star Game, set to take place in Los Angeles on February 15th. Prominent voices in the sports media, including Kurt Helin from NBC Sports and Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, have endorsed him for this honor. Mannix highlighted Sengun as a guaranteed selection, declaring, “He’s having an unbelievable year.”

Sengun’s remarkable season places him alongside other NBA stars such as his teammate Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren, and reigning MVP Nikola Jokic. Comparisons to Jokic, in particular, have been frequent, as both players exhibit a unique blend of passing ability and scoring efficiency that sets them apart.

Shooting Evolution and Areas for Growth

This season, Sengun has made significant strides in his shooting, particularly from long range, an area he dedicated extensive time to improving during the offseason. Although he has experienced some regression, his outside shooting remains at a career-best level when considering his shooting volume.

However, the Rockets’ fanbase has expressed a desire for a more balanced offensive approach, particularly regarding the distribution of shots between Sengun and Durant, especially in clutch situations.

One area where Sengun can improve is his free-throw shooting. Currently at 73 percent, this marks his best performance from the charity stripe; however, he faltered during a recent game against the New Orleans Pelicans, missing four crucial shots that could have helped seal the victory for Houston. Despite this setback, it does not diminish his candidacy for the All-Star Game—his contributions to the team have been undeniable.

Alperen Sengun’s journey this season has not only established him as a pivotal player for the Rockets but also set the stage for what could be a bright future in the NBA. With his skill set and evolving game, he stands poised to continue making his mark in the league.
