Caruso’s Christmas Struggles Spark Thunder’s Resurgence

Alex Caruso faced a challenging Christmas Day performance, one that many observers would label as a dud. He managed to score only 12 points, accompanied by a lone rebound and a block, while hitting just 3 of 13 shots from the field. The most glaring statistic was his dismal 2-for-12 showing from beyond the arc. Acknowledging the disappointment, Caruso recognized that he fell short of his own standards. Yet, amidst the frustration, there was no real cause for alarm.

Bounce Back Mentality

It’s easy to dismiss such outings in the NBA as a simple case of being in a make-or-miss league. Caruso, a product of Texas A&M, had demonstrated sharp shot selection prior to the holiday game against the Spurs. Known for his career 37% shooting from three-point range, he simply encountered a rough patch. His track record speaks volumes; last postseason, he emerged as one of the Thunder’s most reliable shooters, boasting an impressive 41% from deep over 23 playoff games.

Head Coach Mark Daigneault weighed in on Caruso’s Christmas struggles, emphasizing the mental fortitude required to keep shooting. “The thing about that one is he started 0-for-8 and he shot 12 of them. There are not many competitors out there who would take the seventh, the eighth, the ninth, the tenth, the eleventh, and the twelfth shots,” Daigneault noted. “You have to be pretty mentally tough and lost in the competition. He knows those are the right shots for the team. He doesn’t care about the fact that the last one didn’t go in. He keeps shooting them. That’s why he’s a great competitor.”

Resilience and Preparation

Despite the setback against San Antonio, Caruso’s commitment to his craft remains unwavering. “I think the Christmas game was frustrating for me because I live for one or two games a year where I get 10 attempts, and I’d like to be prepared to make them,” he reflected. “I feel like I put the work in to shoot well or at least better than I did in that game. Just trying to be consistent with the work I put in… I didn’t go home and have a miserable Christmas, other than we lost and I was a little upset with that. The next day, I got my treatment and got to work.”

Following that disappointing outing, Caruso has found his rhythm, averaging 8.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and 1.3 stocks per game. His shooting has been remarkable, hitting 73% from the field and an impressive 57% from three. His contributions have reinvigorated the Thunder, providing the necessary spark for the team.

Leading by Example

While no one is overemphasizing the significance of Caruso’s Christmas game, it’s essential to recognize the maturity he displayed in handling such a public setback. His approach and confidence serve as a valuable lesson for this young Thunder squad still navigating the trials of an NBA season. Caruso’s resilience has undoubtedly left a mark, reinforcing the notion that consistent effort and mental toughness are integral to success in this league.
