76ers Seek Future Success by Shopping Drummond and Oubre to Secure Grimes’ Growth

The Philadelphia 76ers find themselves at a crossroads as they gear up for the upcoming season. Following a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, the team is eager to reclaim its status as a contender. To facilitate a return to form, the 76ers are actively exploring trades involving some of their role players, aiming to bolster their future roster.

Strategic Moves for Cap Flexibility

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the 76ers are considering offers for both Andre Drummond and Kelly Oubre Jr. The goal is to create additional salary cap flexibility, which would be essential for retaining Quentin Grimes, a promising restricted free agent. The organization has dedicated significant time this offseason to finding a resolution that allows them to keep Grimes, who has demonstrated his potential since joining the team.

“If they are able to find a deal for one of those two guys as we get closer to camp, that would open up some more wiggle room for Philadelphia to be able to pay [Quentin] Grimes a little bit more,” said Fischer, highlighting the strategic nature of their approach.

Grimes’ Emergence as a Key Player

Quentin Grimes emerged as a standout performer for the 76ers last season after being acquired in February. In his 28 appearances, including 25 starts, Grimes averaged an impressive 21.9 points, 4.5 assists, and 5.4 rebounds per game. His ability to shoot 37 percent from three-point range made him an invaluable asset to the team’s offensive scheme, solidifying his role as an integral part of the 76ers’ future plans.

Oubre and Drummond’s Contributions

Kelly Oubre Jr. has been a reliable contributor for Philadelphia over the past two seasons. He has averaged 15.3 points per game while shooting 45 percent from the field, although his three-point percentage has been less consistent at 30 percent. His experience and scoring ability add depth to the roster, making him a valuable trade piece.

Andre Drummond, who returned to the 76ers for his second stint last season, provided solid contributions as well. In 40 games, he averaged 7.3 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, showcasing his rebounding prowess and experience. However, with the team’s focus shifting towards the future, both Oubre and Drummond could be seen as expendable assets in a strategic trade.

As the 76ers navigate the offseason, their efforts to secure Quentin Grimes will be pivotal. The potential movement of Drummond and Oubre could pave the way for a more financially flexible roster, setting the stage for future success in Philadelphia.
