George Russell, Mercedes AMG F1 driver, expressed the importance of maintaining belief in the team’s ability to make significant progress with the updates they bring to the Formula 1 car in 2024. Despite the initial optimism about their revamped W15 car, Mercedes had a tough start to this season, their worst since 2011. Although they showed flashes of potential in the first five races, these positive signs often disappeared when it mattered most. Currently, they are 44 points behind McLaren, who struggled at the start of last season but improved after updates. Russell believes a successful development package can completely transform a team’s performance, citing Aston Martin in the winter of 2022 and McLaren the year before as examples of this. However, he also acknowledges the challenges they face and their position in the fight among the top teams. Mercedes will introduce new parts in Miami, hoping to have a significant impact. Russell understands that all teams are constantly improving their cars, but the key is to improve at a faster pace than their competitors.
Lewis Hamilton, seven-time world champion who will join Ferrari at the end of the season, had a promising Sprint in China, unexpectedly finishing in second place. However, a drastic change in setup resulted in a disappointing elimination in Q1. Hamilton is optimistic about the upcoming updates and hopes they will widen the operating window of the W15 car. He acknowledges it will still be a challenge, but is excited to be in the United States and welcomes the unique weather conditions and demands they will impose on the tires and car performance.
