Mercedes is eager to attract Verstappen to their team in the future. The CEO of Mercedes, Ola Kallenius, expressed his desire to see Verstappen join the Formula 1 team. The German company will have a new lineup of drivers next season due to Lewis Hamilton’s decision to move to Ferrari in 2025. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff made it clear that his main goal is to hire Verstappen, who currently leads the championship with a 69-point advantage and is aiming for his fourth consecutive title. However, Verstappen has no intention of leaving his contract with Red Bull before it expires in 2028, as he continues to achieve victories. Kallenius believes that the regulatory changes in 2026 will give Mercedes the opportunity to regain its dominance and become an attractive option for Verstappen. He stated, “The best driver wants to have the best car. And that is our responsibility, to bring together the best package. The landscape will change in 2026 with new rules. That is also a chance. Who knows? But I think Max would look great in a silver car, wouldn’t he?” Wolff confirmed that Carlos Sainz, the departing Ferrari driver, will not be considered for a future partnership with Mercedes, as the team wants to embark on a long-term project. If Verstappen decides to stay at Red Bull in 2025, it is likely that Mercedes will choose Andrea Kimi Antonelli as George Russell’s teammate. Wolff explained, “We want to enter a completely new era. Whether it’s with Kimi or depending on what Max does.” He also revealed that Ferrari’s decision to hire Hamilton for next year played a role in their choice. Wolff further stated that no decision has been made regarding Hamilton’s replacement, as they are waiting to see what happens with Verstappen. He said, “No decision about the driver has been made. We want to postpone that decision as much as possible because who knows what will happen.”
