Andy Cowell, the renowned racing engine engineer, possesses an extraordinary talent and an insatiable drive for success. His innovative thinking often surpasses what others believe to be possible, as exemplified by his groundbreaking work on the 1999 Cosworth CR-1, 2001 BMW P81, and 2014 Mercedes PU106 engines, all of which revolutionized Formula 1 engine technology. Cowell consistently proves that he can achieve the extraordinary; it is just a matter of charting the right course.
Cowell’s contributions to Formula 1 go far beyond his engineering prowess. He possesses a rare gift for leadership and the ability to inspire his team. This combination of skills is truly remarkable, making him one of the most significant figures in Formula 1 history. Under his guidance, Mercedes HPP has emerged as the dominant force in the highly engine-focused world of Formula 1.
Through his leadership, Cowell has united a team of talented individuals, promoting a shared mindset and a collective pursuit of success. Just as in designing an engine, he skillfully manages the diverse elements of his team, ensuring that no potential is wasted. Despite his achievements, Cowell remains humble and approachable, without any air of superiority.
His enthusiasm and passion are palpable, and he possesses a surprising ability to explain complex concepts in a way that anyone can understand. Cowell’s dedication to learning from failures and persevering in the face of adversity is a testament to his tenacity and determination.
In addition to his expertise in engineering, Cowell also has a passion for racing cars. This firsthand experience has given him a deep understanding of the distinction between theory and practice. He recognizes that his ultimate goal is not just to create the best engine on a dynamometer, but to optimize the engine for the overall performance of the car.
This understanding proved invaluable when he joined forces with Ross Brawn in 2009. The partnership coincided with the formation of the Mercedes factory team, blurring the traditional boundaries between team and engine supplier. This new dynamic opened up endless possibilities and set the stage for even greater achievements.
He had joined (via Cosworth and BMW) what was then Ilmor in 2004 and was there when it became Mercedes HPP, rising to the position of chief engineer a few years later, director in 2008 – and leader in 2012.
He had developed a strong partnership with the various engineers at McLaren over the years, when they were the official Mercedes partner team. However, the integration of the Brixworth HPP factory into the same entity as the Brackley-based team, all under the ‘Mercedes’ umbrella, opened up new possibilities.
Cowell was the perfect individual to seize these opportunities and push the boundaries even further. The fact that a new radical formula of engines was on the horizon at that time made the current era of Mercedes in Formula 1 seem destined.
Energy, clarity, and depth: it is easy to imagine his smiling face asking challenging questions to the talented experts who work for him – quickly assessing the importance of their answers and taking action.
Under Cowell’s leadership, there would always be a pursuit of improvement, and decisions would be made quickly. The ultimate goal was always to achieve the fastest lap time.
“Engineering is a delicate balance,” he once told me. “Creativity, intuition, the best simulation within the established deadline…
“It’s also about having determination and persistence, because races are all about research and development, and the success rate is low. A 20% success rate in R&D is considered good.
“You need persistence to get up and learn from your mistakes when things go wrong, without giving up.”
Therefore, his departure will undoubtedly be a significant loss for Mercedes HPP and their Formula 1 program. However, it wouldn’t be Andy Cowell if he didn’t leave behind a group of highly qualified individuals to continue his legacy.
Any new engineering venture Andy pursues will certainly set new standards. At Mercedes, he leaves behind a team fully immersed in his philosophy.
From a personal standpoint, I regret his departure as I now have to find someone else to direct my engine-related questions to.
