Sainz, on the other hand, struggled in qualifying and finished three tenths of a second behind his teammate. He will start in fifth position on the grid for the Miami Sprint Race. Last year, Leclerc finished seventh in the Miami Grand Prix, while Sainz finished fifth. Sainz expressed his disappointment with his qualifying performance in Miami. The car’s handling changed between sessions and he struggled during the Qualifying Sprint.
“The run with soft tires, however, was more or less good, but I accelerated in turn 17 and made a costly mistake that left me in P5. Let’s try to recover and then we have another opportunity to work on the car and reverse the situation for the Grand Prix qualifying and for the main race on Sunday,” added Sainz, who will start in P5 for the Sprint Race.
The team principal of the Ferrari F1 team, Fred Vasseur, summed up his team’s Friday: “Today we witnessed a situation similar to last weekend’s qualifying, when conditions can change significantly depending on the tire compound, while remaining very competitive among the top three or four teams.
“Both of our drivers felt more comfortable with the soft compound and we can be quite satisfied with what happened. Charles did particularly well, despite not participating much in this morning’s free practice. Carlos was keeping up with him until the final sector, where he lost some time.
“It is quite challenging to have a clear understanding of tomorrow’s race because we, like many others, did not complete a long run. We will use the sprint race as part of our preparation for Sunday and evaluate whether the setup choices we made will give us an advantage in terms of tire management.
“We will need a good start, especially for Carlos, but I believe we have a chance,” expressed Vasseur, whose team has incorporated a touch of blue into their iconic red livery, paying homage to the team’s rich history as well as their new main sponsor, HP.
