The first qualifying session of the 2024 season took place on the waterfront streets. An intense battle unfolded on Saturday afternoon in St. Petersburg, as IndyCar drivers competed to determine the starting grid for the race the following day. In the end, it was Josef Newgarden who secured the top spot, edging out Felix Rosenqvist by just 0.006 seconds. In an exciting twist, the reigning champion of the Indianapolis 500 secured the pole position in the final moments of qualifying. Rosenqvist, now racing with Meyer Shank Racing, will start alongside Newgarden on the front row. Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta complete the second row of the grid. It is worth noting that none of this year’s rookies were able to advance to the second round of qualifying, highlighting the challenging nature of the 1.8-mile street circuit. The St. Petersburg Grand Prix is scheduled for Sunday, March 10, at 12:30 pm Eastern time.
