Three seasons into the current Formula 1 regulations and the once dominant Formula 1 World Champions are still chasing the concept. While Red Bull, more than any other team, and Ferrari, as shown in Melbourne, are now ahead of Mercedes in the usual top three rankings.
Mercedes is still struggling with their extensively redesigned package, even behind their engine customers, McLaren and Aston Martin. Consequently, Hamilton is facing a tough final season with the Silver Arrows, while George Russell had a scare in Australia as he prepares to take over the place of the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, who is moving to Maranello.
After a disappointing weekend at the Australian Grand Prix for Toto Wolff and his team, Villeneuve expressed his disappointment, stating: “It’s very disappointing. Based on their pre-season comments, it seemed like they were back in the fight and the car was supposedly amazing. But the first races have shown that this is not the case. The car seems difficult to control. Lewis is struggling to set up the car while George seems more comfortable with it.” So far this season, Russell has outperformed Hamilton in the standings, with a 3-0 advantage.
Villeneuve predicts that Mercedes will gradually shift their focus to George, as he is the future driver of the team.
Inevitably, the 52-year-old Canadian also shared his thoughts on the 2025 Formula 1 Silly Season, which caused a frenzy of activity on February 1st, when news broke that Hamilton could join Ferrari, creating a stir in the paddock, as one of the most coveted spots in motorsport became available.
Increasing the excitement was Christian Horner’s scandal, which caused instability at Red Bull. Speculations emerged that Verstappen, their main driver, could leave the team and join Mercedes, a move that was previously unthinkable.
With Carlos Sainz’s recent victory in Australia and experienced Fernando Alonso always looking for another opportunity in a top team, both drivers are also potential candidates to partner with Verstappen.
If Verstappen makes the switch to Mercedes, Red Bull would be covered, as either of the two Spanish drivers would fit well alongside Sergio Perez, who needs to prove his worth by consistently achieving good results, whether finishing just behind Verstappen or even ahead of him, as he did in Melbourne.
Looking at Red Bull’s junior team, Yuki Tsunoda and Daniel Ricciardo would hardly be considered as replacements for Perez, let alone as competitors to challenge Verstappen. This means that Red Bull would need to look outside their own talent pool for a suitable replacement.
Red Bull or Mercedes would benefit from Alonso’s experience, according to Villeneuve’s analysis. He believes that these teams need a driver known for their aggressiveness, selfishness when necessary, hunger, and knowledge of what it takes to succeed. The only available driver that fits this description is Fernando.
Villeneuve suggests that Alonso would be a suitable choice for these teams. However, he acknowledges that working with Alonso has proven challenging for some teams in the past, while others have found it easier. Red Bull and Mercedes, in particular, are known to be difficult to deal with. If key figures like Helmut Marko or Toto Wolff don’t like a driver, it could lead to complications.
Another option, according to Villeneuve, could be Sainz. He describes Sainz as a mature and intelligent driver, highlighting his performance in the Singapore race last year and, to some extent, in Australia. Villeneuve emphasizes that Sainz won the race for Ferrari, not the other way around. Although Sainz has many strengths, it is still uncertain whether he has the same level of skill as Verstappen, especially in terms of car control.
Villeneuve expresses doubts about the possibility of Verstappen joining Mercedes. He cannot imagine Toto Wolff wanting to hire Max, unless it is just to annoy Red Bull. Villeneuve believes that Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen would arise from a desire to get back at their rival team, rather than a genuine desire for Max’s talent. He suggests that there are personal disagreements both inside and outside Red Bull, making the whole situation quite confusing.
