The FIA has revealed that it deliberately chose to impose strict regulations in the initial technical rules of the 2026 Formula 1 with the intention of relaxing certain aspects later on. Earlier this week, the FIA released the guidelines that will shape the future of the sport, aiming to improve the overall racing spectacle by introducing lighter and smaller cars. The proposed rules include a weight reduction of 30 kg and a decrease of 100 mm in width compared to current cars, as well as a 30% reduction in downforce and a 55% decrease in drag. However, concerns have been raised by team bosses and drivers regarding the feasibility of the FIA’s plans. However, FIA Technical Director Jan Monchaux revealed that the decision to limit the rules was made to facilitate future adjustments rather than impose more restrictions. Monchaux stated that ongoing discussions with teams are necessary to find a compromise, as teams tend to be hesitant when it comes to implementing significant changes. The current regulations, which have been presented and are expected to be voted on, are considered the most restrictive that teams will face. However, the FIA believes that it will be easier in the coming months to increase freedom and revise certain aspects of the regulations that may be too restrictive. The FIA’s approach is based on the belief that teams will agree to have more freedom and that it is more reasonable to introduce changes gradually. If the approach had been the opposite, providing teams with a high level of freedom in car design, this could have compromised the objectives of the new regulations. Therefore, the FIA believes it is more practical to start with a solid foundation and then, with the support of the teams, gradually increase freedom in specific areas without compromising the overall objectives of the regulations, such as creating agile cars through weight reduction and decreased downforce. The FIA is confident that this step-by-step process, which involves reviewing areas where little or no freedom is currently offered, will work effectively and allow for more freedom in the future.
The Director of the Williams Team, James Vowles, expressed concern that the regulations in their current form would result in 2026 cars lapping at speeds similar to their counterparts in Formula 2. However, the FIA’s Director of Single-Seaters, Tombazis, eased these concerns by stating that it will be easy to relax the expected decrease in downforce. “I believe the concerns are valid because people are judging the regulations based on what they see on paper,” said Tombazis. “So, I am not worried about these issues raised. However, as I mentioned earlier, we expect to make improvements in performance, which is why we initially set the bar low. This allows us to gradually increase downforce in collaboration with the teams. Increasing the downforce of these cars is a simple task. It’s not a matter of restricting freedom. That is exactly the direction we are heading. So, I understand the comments. I am confident that these cars will be faster than F2 or any other series. I believe this concern will be completely resolved when we finalize the regulations.”
