Fernando Alonso definitively responds when asked if the penalty he received at the Australian GP would affect his driving style. The two-time world champion received a 20-second penalty after the race due to a supposed brake incident that resulted in him hitting the barriers at turn 6 of the Albert Park circuit. During a media day press conference in Melbourne, Alonso was asked about his thoughts on the penalty and if he would change his racing approach. He made it clear that he found the penalty surprising and considered it an isolated incident, therefore, he does not intend to change his driving style in the future.
Alonso also expressed his belief that such an incident would not have been penalized on a track like Abu Dhabi, as the Yas Marina Circuit offers more runoff area. Despite praising the FIA for taking action against him, the Aston Martin driver firmly maintained his perspective on the incident. He also criticized turn 6 at Albert Park, deeming it unsafe and dangerous. Alonso highlighted a previous incident involving George Russell and emphasized that the turn tends to result in multiple accidents due to its challenging nature.
In light of this, Alonso urged the FIA to make modifications to turn 6 before the next race at the circuit. He emphasized the importance of enhancing safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. With the approaching Japanese GP, Alonso will undoubtedly continue to push himself to the limit. It remains to be seen if any changes will be made to the turn before the opening of next year’s season at Albert Park.
