The Formula 1 car for 2026 is almost ready and there are new advances in the engine that will help with overtaking. The deadline to approve and publish the first draft of the technical chassis regulations is June 2024, along with the existing engine rules. The six registered manufacturers, including Red Bull Powertrains, Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, Renault, and Audi, face a significant technical challenge. The most significant change is the removal of the MGU-H, which converts wasted heat into electrical energy. This change aims to simplify the system and make it more relevant to road cars. The loss of the MGU-H will be compensated by an increase in the power of the MGU-K, which will bring the balance between the internal combustion engine and electrical energy closer to 50/50. The regulations are still being refined and a new “manual override” function is being considered to give drivers more power at high speeds for overtaking. The FIA recognizes the need for overtaking assistance and will likely retain the drag reduction system, along with other active aerodynamics. However, there is concern that the cars will be so aerodynamic and run at high speeds on straights that overtaking will become even more challenging. The FIA believes that the drag characteristics of the 2026 cars will still generate a decent slipstream effect, but the effect of DRS will be reduced compared to current regulations. The use of MGU-K power will be managed to limit maximum speeds and address safety concerns. The FIA seeks to find a balance between allowing close racing and overtaking while still maintaining the challenge for the drivers. The 2026 cars will be equipped with a “manual override” system that drivers can activate to access more electrical power at high speeds. The duration and use of this function will be determined in the sporting regulations. The FIA believes that this combination of active aerodynamics and manual override will preserve the traditional skills of the driver and prevent F1 from becoming overly automated. Communication between drivers will not be limited as it is essential for safety reasons. The FIA aims to ensure that essential driver skills, such as braking, hitting the grip limit, and hitting the apex, remain the focus of the sport. The override function is not intended to make overtaking easy, but rather to help the chasing car get closer to the car ahead and attack in braking zones. The goal is to create exciting battles and not rely solely on pressing a button to overtake.
