The second race of the Western Championship in the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli at Portland International Raceway was a non-stop, action-packed event. Competitors had to rely solely on their speed and skill throughout the 51-lap race. Tim Carroll emerged victorious in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series, leading from start to finish. Chris Evans dominated the XGT class, securing the overall race win.
Carroll started the race in the first position after setting the fastest lap in Saturday’s race. He got off to a strong start, leaving his competitors behind. Michael LaPaglia, who started in the runner-up spot, struggled in the opening lap and fell back to fourth place. Tim Barber and Ken Sutherland took over second and third place respectively, and the top three remained unchanged for the next 24 laps.
While Carroll maintained a comfortable lead over Barber, LaPaglia fought his way back to the front. By lap 26, LaPaglia had moved into third place and set his sights on Carroll. However, mechanical issues plagued Kyle Kelley and Sutherland, forcing them to retire from the race. LaPaglia managed to overtake Barber and closed the gap to Carroll, but he couldn’t complete the pass before the checkered flag waved. Carroll claimed his first-career Trans Am win, followed by LaPaglia and Barber. Cole Moore finished fourth, while Barry Boes, despite a crash in the morning practice session, finished fifth.
In the XGT class, Chris Evans dominated the race, leading from start to finish and securing the overall victory. John Moore initially put up a good fight but faded throughout the race, giving Evans a comfortable lead.
In the SGT race, David Hampton was the only competitor. He drove flawlessly from start to finish, moving up from 17th overall to 12th and securing his first-career SGT victory.
The Western Championship will take a break for the summer and return to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch on October 18-20 for the Spring Mountain SpeedTour.
