Fernando Alonso, driver of the Aston Martin F1 team, recently explained how the support of his loved ones played a crucial role in his decision to continue his Formula 1 career with Aston Martin. Despite feeling physically fit and in great condition, the 42-year-old driver had considered extending his contract due to the demanding nature of the sport, which now has a calendar of 24 races. One of his main concerns was the possible lack of time he would have to spend with his family. However, after talking to his family, who assured him of their presence at more races, Alonso felt at ease and decided to extend his contract. When asked about his decision, Alonso expressed his unwavering passion for Formula 1 and his determination to keep driving. He emphasized that the sacrifices he has to make are outweighed by the joy and satisfaction he feels behind the wheel. Alonso’s love for the sport is evident in the fact that he dedicates his entire life to Formula 1, from his training routine to his dietary choices. He firmly believes that his current lifestyle is rewarding and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Alonso’s desire to improve and excel on the track has not diminished, as he still feels there is room for growth and better performance in different conditions.
One aspect of driving that concerns me the most is being away from my family and not being able to have a normal life or start my own family. However, I have decided to address this issue year by year and month by month. I have had discussions with my family and we have come up with a plan to make some changes that will help me not miss important moments. In fact, my family will be accompanying me more frequently to races, including the upcoming one in Miami. My mother, sister, and two nieces will be present.
Alonso’s latest contract ensures that he will continue competing in Formula 1 until his mid-40s. This will also allow him to surpass the record for most starts in the Grand Prix, which he already holds. It is worth noting that Alonso will be reuniting with Honda, the same manufacturer he publicly criticized when they had a disastrous return with McLaren in 2015. However, Honda’s success with Red Bull since then has convinced Alonso that this partnership is the best opportunity for him to achieve his long-awaited third title in F1.
Despite his previous comments about Honda, Alonso has performed exceptionally well in recent years. In fact, he considers his recent race in Japan as one of the top five weekends of his career in Formula 1. Currently, Aston Martin sits in fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship after the first four races, with Alonso contributing 24 of the team’s total 33 points so far.
