Rain had been threatening the Motegi area throughout the Japanese GP weekend, and it finally intensified during the Moto2 race after a few light showers on Friday and Saturday.
Shortly after the start, during the first lap, rain began to fall heavily in certain parts of the circuit, forcing the race to be stopped with a red flag.
Unlike in MotoGP, riders in the intermediate classes cannot switch to bikes with different tyres. As a result, the race was neutralized, and the riders returned to the pits.
The race will resume with the original starting grid, as the first lap was not completed, and will now be shortened to 12 laps.
