Yankees Set Sights on Chris Bassitt to Address Pitching Challenges

As the New York Yankees gear up for the 2026 season, they find themselves in a precarious position with their pitching staff. With both Carlos Rodón and Gerrit Cole expected to miss opening day, the team is actively exploring options to reinforce their rotation. Among the potential candidates, Toronto Blue Jays’ Chris Bassitt has emerged as a compelling target.

Injury Concerns Loom for Yankees

The Yankees’ pitching woes are becoming increasingly evident. The anticipated absence of two key starters, Rodón and Cole, raises significant concerns for the team’s early-season performance. As highlighted by analysts, the Yankees are likely to seek a starter who can fill the gap temporarily until their top arms return to action.

Bassitt’s Experience Makes Him an Ideal Candidate

Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggests that Bassitt, who has previous experience pitching in New York, could be an astute acquisition. “With both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón expected to start the year on the injured list, the Yankees will be in the market to add a starter,” Reuter noted. He emphasized that a stopgap veteran on a short-term deal would be the most sensible approach, considering both Cole and Rodón’s projected return in the early part of the season.

At 36 years old, Bassitt’s market may be somewhat limited, primarily drawing interest from teams in need of a reliable, albeit temporary, solution. Reuter pointed out that Bassitt excelled in a swingman role for the Blue Jays during their postseason run, demonstrating his capability to perform under pressure.

Bassitt’s Performance with the Blue Jays

During the previous season, Bassitt showcased his skills, recording a 3.96 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP across 31 games as a starter. His experience in high-stakes environments could prove invaluable for the Yankees as they navigate the early challenges of the season.

As the offseason progresses, the Yankees are expected to weigh their options carefully. Adding a player of Bassitt’s caliber could provide the stability they desperately need while awaiting the return of their frontline starters. With a strategic approach, the Yankees may just find the answer to their pitching crisis in the form of a seasoned veteran from their division rival.
