Yankees Explore Trade Options as Outfield Plans Shift
As the trade deadline approaches, the New York Yankees find themselves in the market for an outfielder. While the team has been vocal about its desire to re-sign Cody Bellinger, discussions have stalled. This has led general manager Brian Cashman to consider alternative options, including a surprising name: Nick Castellanos.
Bellinger and Backup Plans
Cody Bellinger remains the Yankees’ top target, a player they hope to bring back after a solid season. However, with negotiations at a standstill, the Yankees are weighing other possibilities. Among the alternatives are the high-priced Kyle Tucker, who could command a steep price, and the more budget-friendly Austin Hays.
Yet, if Cashman decides to pivot from free agency, Castellanos could emerge as a compelling trade candidate.
The Case for Castellanos
At 33, Castellanos has become a polarizing figure in Philadelphia, where he has not quite met expectations. Despite this, he boasts an impressive resume, including two All-Star selections and a Silver Slugger Award earned in 2021. Over his 13-year career, he has consistently demonstrated the ability to hit for power, belting 20 home runs or more in six different seasons, including last year.
Castellanos offers versatility on the field, capable of playing both corner outfield positions and having logged time at third base early in his career. His durability is another asset; he has played at least 136 games in each of the past four seasons. With his current contract set to expire after this season—a five-year deal worth $100 million—the Yankees wouldn’t be saddled with a lengthy financial commitment.
Concerns on the Horizon
However, the potential trade for Castellanos isn’t without its pitfalls. Last season, he managed only 17 home runs in 147 games, accompanied by a disappointing .694 OPS. His strikeout rate is also concerning; Castellanos fanned 133 times last year and has surpassed the 100-strikeout mark in 11 of his 13 seasons.
As the Yankees assess their options, Castellanos presents a blend of promise and risk. It remains to be seen whether Cashman will pull the trigger on a trade or continue pursuing free-agent options as the clock ticks down.
