Pirates Prospect Shines in Arizona Fall League
The Pittsburgh Pirates are showcasing a promising talent in the Arizona Fall League, and eyes are on outfielder Will Taylor as he aims to finish the season on a high note. This Clemson junior is part of the Salt River Rafters, alongside several other Pirates prospects and players from organizations like the Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, Colorado Rockies, and Los Angeles Angels.
Taylor’s Impactful Home Run
On October 15, Taylor made headlines with his first home run in the Arizona Fall League, a significant moment that energized his team. Facing a 91.8 mph sinker from a Glendale Desert Dogs pitcher, Taylor unleashed a powerful swing, launching the ball at an impressive speed of 100 mph and sending it soaring 394 feet. His homer came during a tough game where the Rafters were trailing 7-1 in the third inning. Taylor’s blast contributed to a remarkable comeback victory for Salt River, who rallied to win 12-9, supported by a two-run shot from fellow Pirates prospect Esmerlyn Valdez later in the game.
Navigating Early Struggles at the Plate
Despite the excitement surrounding his home run, Taylor’s performance at the plate has been a mixed bag thus far. He holds a batting line of .182/.308/.545, resulting in an OPS of .853. In 11 at-bats, he has recorded two hits, including his home run and a double, while also drawing two walks but striking out four times.
Versatile Defensive Opportunities
Taylor has been given various chances to showcase his skills defensively, starting in right field against the Mesa Solar Sox on October 9, and then shifting to center field on two occasions against Glendale on October 15 and again in a matchup with the Surprise Saguaros. As the fall league progresses, his ability to adapt and perform will be crucial for the Pirates as they build toward the future.
With a month left in the Arizona Fall League, Will Taylor’s journey is one to watch. The potential he has shown, combined with the experience gained in this competitive setting, could be pivotal as he looks to solidify his place in the Pirates’ future plans leading up to the 2026 season.
