The Los Angeles Dodgers received a significant boost ahead of their National League Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds with the surprising return of catcher Will Smith. After suffering a fractured bone in his right hand earlier this month, Smith has been cleared to join the Dodgers’ roster for the crucial postseason match-up.

Smith’s Injury and Recovery

Smith’s injury occurred during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates when a foul tip struck his hand, initially diagnosed as a contusion. However, further examination revealed a fracture, which has kept him sidelined since September 9. Despite the setback, Smith pushed through rehabilitation and participated in batting practice, demonstrating enough progress to be included in the 26-man roster.

Manager Dave Roberts expressed optimism about Smith’s return, stating that he “came out of it well” after hitting in the cage at Dodger Stadium. “He’s going to take part in the live session outside tonight during our workout,” Roberts added, signaling hope that Smith could contribute in a pinch-hitting role, despite not being ready to don the catcher’s gear.

Impact of Smith’s Presence

Before his injury, Smith was enjoying a stellar season, boasting a .296 batting average with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs. His absence was felt deeply, and the Dodgers adapted by relying on backup catchers Ben Rortvedt and Dalton Rushing. Rortvedt, a recent acquisition from the Tampa Bay Rays, has taken on the bulk of the catching duties, appearing in 18 games for the Dodgers and posting a .224/.309/.327 slash line.

Rushing, who was previously the top position player prospect in the Dodgers’ organization, has had a challenging transition to the majors, hitting .204 with limited power in 53 games. However, he finished the season on a high note, recording six hits, including a home run and a double, in his last 17 plate appearances.

Looking Ahead to the Wild Card Series

As the Dodgers prepare for their Wild Card Series opener against the Reds on Tuesday night, the inclusion of Smith could be a game-changer. While he may not be able to catch, his ability to step up as a pinch hitter could provide a crucial advantage in tight situations. With a roster that includes both Rortvedt and Rushing, the Dodgers’ strategy will be critical as they aim to advance in the postseason.
