White Sox shuffle roster: Tauchman and Gonzalez out, Cannon and Hill step in for Yankees matchup

The Chicago White Sox are making significant adjustments as they prepare for their evening clash against the New York Yankees. The team announced four roster moves, including the placement of outfielder Mike Tauchman and pitcher Wikelman Gonzalez on the injured list, paving the way for Jonathan Cannon and Derek Hill to join the active roster.

Tauchman faces surgery

In a tough blow for the White Sox, Mike Tauchman has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a meniscus tear in his right knee. This injury marks the end of Tauchman’s eighth season in Major League Baseball. Tauchman is scheduled to undergo surgery, with White Sox manager Will Venable expressing his disappointment over the loss.

“Tauch was awesome,” Venable remarked. “He really set the tone for our group. His performance on the field and his presence in the clubhouse have made a significant impact, particularly on our younger players.”

Tauchman wraps up his season with a solid slash line of .263/.356/.400, including nine home runs and 40 RBIs over 93 games. The outfielder’s contributions will be sorely missed, especially as he enters his arbitration years in 2026.

Gonzalez’s rookie campaign cut short

Wikelman Gonzalez, another key player, is also sidelined for the season after being placed on the 15-day injured list due to a right elbow impingement. Venable confirmed that while the injury is painful, there are no long-term concerns. “We just want to protect him a little bit,” he said, indicating the decision was made with the player’s health in mind.

Acquired from the Boston Red Sox as part of the Garrett Crochet trade, Gonzalez’s rookie season was marked by a commendable 2.66 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP in 20.1 innings. His absence leaves a noticeable gap in the White Sox’s pitching rotation.

Cannon gets a second chance

As the White Sox adjust their lineup, Jonathan Cannon is set to see a return to the mound. Scheduled to take on a bulk role following Fraser Ellard, who will open the game, Cannon’s path has been rocky this season. The 25-year-old right-hander was originally part of the starting rotation but struggled, leading to his demotion to Triple-A after a series of disappointing outings.

Cannon’s brief stint back with the major league club saw him allow five earned runs in just 2.1 innings. However, he looks to rebound and make an impact in the upcoming game. While with Triple-A, he logged a 5.40 ERA over seven starts.

Hill joins the fold via waivers

In an effort to bolster their outfield, the White Sox claimed outfielder Derek Hill off waivers from the Miami Marlins. At 29 years old, Hill has played 53 games this season, with a slash line of .213/.275/.331. His experience spans six major league seasons with multiple teams, including the Tigers and Giants.

Venable expressed enthusiasm about Hill’s arrival, highlighting his energetic demeanor and speed on the field. “He’s an above-average defender and really good against left-handed pitching,” Venable noted. “We’re excited to have him on board as we navigate these changes.”

As the White Sox prepare for their game against the Yankees, the team faces challenges but remains focused on making the most of the roster adjustments. With Tauchman and Gonzalez sidelined, Cannon and Hill will have critical roles to play in the coming games.
