The Chicago White Sox pulled off a thrilling 6-5 victory against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night at Rate Field, aided significantly by the returns of Sean Burke and Miguel Vargas. This win marked the White Sox’s eighth triumph in their last ten games, showcasing their resilience as they continue to fight for a strong finish to the season.
Vargas Makes an Impact in Return
Miguel Vargas, returning from a sprained left hand that sidelined him for just under two weeks, proved pivotal in the game. The corner infielder made his presence felt, going 1-for-4 at the plate and contributing defensively at third base. “To be back in the field and help the team to win, it means a lot to me,” Vargas expressed. “I have to get back on the rhythm, but my hand feels good. It feels great.”
His return not only added depth to the lineup but also helped energize a team that has been finding its stride lately.
Burke’s Return and Initial Struggles
Alongside Vargas, Sean Burke made his return to the major leagues after a stint in Triple-A, where he aimed to refine his mechanics following a tough start to the season. Despite the demotion being frustrating, Burke embraced the opportunity to learn and improve his game. His adjustments paid off, culminating in a fastball that peaked at 99.8 mph during the match.
However, Burke encountered early challenges, yielding a solo home run to Yandy Diaz in just the second at-bat of the game. Known for his tendency to walk batters—ranking among the highest in MLB—Burke faced troubles again in the second inning, loading the bases with three consecutive walks. Yet, he showcased resilience, escaping the jam by striking out Carson Williams and inducing a double play from Chandler Simpson, aided by a swift defensive play from shortstop Colson Montgomery. “I was hoping he would turn it quick enough because I know Simpson can fly,” Burke noted, clearly relieved to see the double play unfold.
Pitching and Offensive Support
Despite the rocky start, Burke settled in, allowing only two baserunners across the next two innings. However, Williams found success against him in the fifth, hitting another solo homer, which marked the end of Burke’s night. He finished with 4.1 innings pitched, three earned runs, and five strikeouts, leaving the game with the White Sox leading 6-2.
Manager Will Venable praised Burke’s effort, acknowledging the challenges posed by walks while also highlighting the positive adjustments he made during the game.
Meanwhile, the White Sox offense provided crucial run support in the second inning, featuring a trio of doubles from Michael A. Taylor, Mike Tauchman, and Lenyn Sosa, extending their lead to 5-1. Andrew Benintendi then added to the score with a solo home run in the third, bringing his season total to 19, just one shy of his career high.
“That was a great second inning for the guys,” Venable remarked, appreciating the players’ ability to read the defense and execute pivotal plays.
Late-Game Tension
Despite a comfortable lead, the White Sox faced late-game pressure. Brandon Eisert, who relieved Burke, surrendered a two-run home run to Junior Caminero, while Mike Vasil allowed an RBI single that trimmed the lead to just one run by the sixth inning.
In a fierce display of pitching depth, Jordan Leasure and Fraser Ellard combined to deliver scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth. The situation escalated when Grant Taylor, who entered seeking to secure the save, exited after just seven pitches due to a right groin strain. Venable confirmed that Taylor would undergo an MRI for further evaluation.
Wikelman Gonzalez stepped in to record two outs, and Tyler Gilbert managed to close out the game by striking out Brandon Lowe with runners on second and third, sealing the dramatic victory for the White Sox. “These guys did a great job stepping up,” Venable noted, commending the team’s ability to adapt under pressure.
