Now nearing the two-year anniversary of his tenure, he is optimistic about the evolution of the team’s pitching staff across all levels.
Bannister envisions a more robust pitching infrastructure as the key to long-term success. This infrastructure is intended to bolster the White Sox’s capabilities in drafting, identifying free agents, executing trades, and fostering internal player development throughout the season. “As we start to layer in and bring in more veteran names, names with more experience, higher ceilings, etc., I think it’s gonna be special,” Bannister remarked in a recent interview. He emphasized the organization’s commitment to creativity in developing pitchers internally, pointing to promising young talents like Hagen Smith and Noah Schultz as foundational pieces.
Transforming Pitching Talent
A testament to Bannister’s vision can already be seen in the White Sox’s recent successes at the Major League level. The organization made headlines by selecting Shane Smith as the No. 1 overall pick in December’s Rule 5 Draft. Smith’s remarkable transition into an All-Star during his rookie year highlights the effectiveness of the team’s developmental strategies. Upon joining the White Sox, he expanded his repertoire to include a changeup and a two-seam fastball, showcasing the organization’s advancements in research and development.
Another standout example is Mike Vasil, another Rule 5 Draft pick who has impressed with a 2.45 ERA over 95.2 innings, serving as both a starter and long reliever. Additionally, Adrian Houser, initially starting the season in Triple-A, delivered a stellar performance with a 2.10 ERA across 11 starts before being traded for valuable prospects. These instances underscore the White Sox’s ability to identify and nurture talent effectively.

White Sox manager Will Venable has noted the significant changes taking place behind the scenes. “I think certainly there’s a lot of things behind the scenes that are happening and there’s development going on to our infrastructure,” Venable stated. A prime example of this collaborative effort is Yoendrys Gomez. Once designated for assignment by the Yankees and Dodgers, Gomez faced a challenging start with the White Sox. The results speak for themselves, as he has posted a commendable 4.15 ERA in eight starts since returning to the team in mid-August.
Bannister believes there is untapped potential in players who may have been overlooked by other teams. “There’s gonna be guys that are cast offs from other teams or not protected, and we’re able to dig into the science and get a little more out of them and make them very useful for us and give them higher ceilings,” he explained. This philosophy of maximizing player potential is central to the White Sox’s rebuilding strategy.

Bannister pointed to significant advancements in their Latin American development efforts, led by David Keller. The White Sox are actively establishing systems that align with their long-term goals of becoming playoff contenders. “Things that, I don’t want to say long overdue, but it’s infrastructure that’s much needed for us to be where we want to be and be a playoff team,” Bannister remarked, acknowledging the support from leadership to build these essential systems.
