Tigers quietly release former top prospect Wilmer Flores after injury-plagued season derails his promising MLB journey

Tigers Release Wilmer Flores, Ending a Promising Yet Injured MLB Journey

The Detroit Tigers have made a significant decision, parting ways with former top prospect Wilmer Flores, who was once highly regarded in the baseball world. The announcement of his release from Triple-A Toledo came quietly earlier this week, highlighting the often-unpredictable nature of player development in Major League Baseball.

Injury-Stricken Season Comes to an End

Flores was activated from the 60-day injured list on Thursday and released on the same day, as noted in his MiLB transactions. By Saturday, he was no longer listed on Toledo’s roster, marking a stark end to a season that had been marred by injury. The right-handed pitcher missed the entirety of the year due to a shoulder ailment but showed signs of recovery during a brief rehabilitation stint in the Florida State League. In those five rehab appearances, he posted an impressive 2.25 ERA over four innings, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out five and issuing three walks.

With his release, Flores is now available for any Major League team to sign, likely on a minor league deal as he is not eligible for the postseason.

A Promising Start to a Career

Flores’ journey began when the Tigers signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2020 after his time at Arizona Western College. The connection to the game runs deep in his family; his older brother, also named Wilmer Flores, currently plays for the San Francisco Giants. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed Flores’s professional debut until 2021.

In that inaugural season, he quickly established himself as a player to watch. Competing in the Florida Complex League and with Class-A Lakeland, he finished with a 6-4 record and a 3.68 ERA, amassing 90 strikeouts across 14 games, 13 of which were starts. His performance earned him a spot in the prestigious Arizona Fall League, propelling him into the realm of Top 100 prospects.

By the end of 2023, the Tigers recognized his potential enough to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft by placing him on their 40-man roster. That season, he reached Double-A Erie, posting a 5-4 record with a 4.65 ERA in 21 starts, along with 90 strikeouts and 33 walks over 89 innings. His opponents hit .253 against him, showcasing his ability to compete at a higher level.

Development Stalls Amidst Injuries

However, the promising trajectory of Flores’s career began to falter in 2024. He started the season with Toledo but soon found himself sidelined due to injury, leading to a stint on the 7-day injured list. Following further complications, he was placed on the 60-day IL, which limited his opportunities for growth and development. His attempts to regain form included rehab outings in Lakeland, but ultimately he ended the season at High-A West Michigan.

In his limited appearances that year, Flores struggled, going 2-3 with a troubling 7.84 ERA over 20 games, including two starts. He struck out 29 batters but also walked 25 in just 31 innings, allowing opponents to bat a concerning .295 against him.

After five seasons with the Tigers, the organization decided it was time to move on from Flores, leaving him to seek new opportunities as he looks to reignite his career in 2026. The story of Wilmer Flores serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of baseball, where potential can be stymied by injuries, yet the hope for a fresh start remains ever-present.
