Tigers Face $4M Decision on José Urquidy as Playoff Hopes Loom

The Detroit Tigers find themselves at a pivotal crossroads regarding José Urquidy, their offseason signing who has yet to step onto the mound this season. With the Tigers holding firm in first place as October approaches, the question looms: will Urquidy’s arm prove worthy of the franchise’s future?

Injury and Inconsistency in the Rotation

The Tigers’ starting rotation has struggled with consistency throughout the season, with Tarik Skubal being a notable exception. As injuries and underwhelming performances have plagued the staff, the team’s playoff aspirations hang in the balance. The addition of Urquidy, who signed just weeks before the season after missing all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery, was intended to bolster the rotation. Given the circumstances, the team anticipated that he wouldn’t be ready until late in the year.

Now, as Urquidy begins his rehabilitation starts, the Tigers are faced with a crucial decision regarding his future with the organization. The contract includes a $4 million option for the 2026 season, which poses a significant question of value, especially considering he has yet to contribute this year.

Evaluating the Options

As the deadline for the option approaches, the question remains: should the Tigers pick up Urquidy’s option? Much will depend on his performance once he returns to the mound. The financial risk is minimal; the Tigers paid him a mere $1 million for this season, allowing them the flexibility to release him if he fails to demonstrate a full recovery.

This situation was always viewed as a low-risk, potentially high-reward gamble. In today’s market, $4 million for a reliable starting pitcher is considered a bargain. However, Urquidy’s last full season was in 2022, where he posted a 3.94 ERA and a 1.168 WHIP across 29 appearances.

Playoff Experience as a Valuable Asset

One aspect that may tip the scales in favor of retaining Urquidy is his playoff experience. His postseason record includes a solid 4.08 ERA in 15 appearances, highlighted by a critical role in helping the Houston Astros clinch the World Series title in 2022. For a young Tigers team aspiring to remain competitive for years to come, this experience could prove invaluable both this season and beyond.

Ultimately, Urquidy must demonstrate that he is healthy and ready to contribute before the Tigers can make a definitive decision. Once he steps back into action, the organization will need to quickly assess his impact not only for this season but also as they weigh his potential role for the next campaign. While skepticism remains regarding his option, if Urquidy proves himself worthy, the Tigers could very well decide to keep the 30-year-old as part of their future plans.
