Tigers’ bullpen ace Finnegan nears return from injury as Detroit eyes American League crown

Tigers’ Bullpen Star Finnegan Approaches Return as Detroit Eyes AL Dominance

The Detroit Tigers are making waves in the American League, and their bullpen has emerged as a formidable force, particularly following the trade deadline. While many teams pursued high-profile players, the Tigers opted for a more calculated approach, making strategic acquisitions that have paid off. Among these, Kyle Finnegan has emerged as one of the most effective relievers in baseball.

Injury Setback for Finnegan

Unfortunately, Finnegan’s momentum took a hit in early September when he suffered an adductor strain, which led to his placement on the injured list. However, recent updates from Chris McCoskey indicate that Finnegan’s recovery is progressing positively. He is expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend, signaling a crucial step toward his return.

“He’s running full out,” McCoskey reported. “He’s only throwing off flat ground, but he’s not babying any throws. He looks, frankly, like a good argument for a more flexible minimum stay on the injured list for pitchers.” These insights underline the optimism surrounding Finnegan’s return, although he will still be sidelined until September 16th.

Finnegan’s Focus on Recovery

Despite the encouraging progress, Finnegan remains cautious about his timeline. “As far as a timeline, I don’t really know the end date,” he stated. “I’m just completing my daily rehab, and the throwing has been going well. Just doing all the required steps and everything has been really good.”

The next milestone in his recovery involves a bullpen session from a standard mound, a significant shift from his current regimen on flat ground. McCoskey noted that Finnegan aims to achieve this milestone this weekend in Miami.

Impact on Tigers’ Postseason Aspirations

Finnegan’s return is critical for the Tigers as they strive for postseason success, eyeing not just a division title but also a potential first-round bye or even the top seed in the American League. Since joining the Tigers, Finnegan has been nearly flawless, pitching 14.1 innings without allowing a single earned run. His impressive stats include four saves, a perfect 3-0 record, one hold, and a remarkable 19 strikeouts against just three hits and three walks.

Before joining Detroit, Finnegan struggled with a 4.38 ERA in 40 appearances, but his turnaround has filled a vital role in the Tigers’ bullpen. He and Will Vest form a potent late-inning duo, illustrating how crucial Finnegan’s presence is to the team’s success.

Looking Ahead

As the Tigers prepare to ramp up Finnegan’s workload, the organization remains hopeful for his timely return. His imminent comeback could prove vital in their quest for postseason glory, and fans are rightfully eager to see him back on the mound.

In other MLB news, the landscape continues to shift as teams strategize for the future, making the final stretch of the season even more captivating.
