Texas Rangers make room for Mahle’s return by designating Edwards for assignment in roster shuffle

Rangers Adjust Roster for Mahle’s Return

The Texas Rangers are celebrating the return of Tyler Mahle from the 60-day Injured List, a move that brings both relief and necessitates a tough decision. In an effort to make room for Mahle, the team has designated Carl Edwards Jr., a veteran pitcher who was part of the historic 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series roster, for assignment.

A Tough Farewell

In a statement confirming the roster change, the Rangers announced the DFA of Edwards, with the move aimed at accommodating Mahle’s reinstatement. Edwards, who had been signed to a minor league deal, made only a brief appearance at the major league level with the Rangers, pitching three scoreless innings. His limited time with the team underscores the challenges of a competitive roster, especially as the season winds down.

Mahle’s Impressive Performance

Mahle’s return is a significant boost for the Rangers. Before his injury, he showcased impressive form, posting a 2.20 ERA across 15 games while racking up 62 strikeouts in 81.2 innings. His absence, which stemmed from a rotator cuff strain diagnosed in June, kept him sidelined for nearly three months. Now that he is back, the Rangers hope to leverage his skills as they approach the final stretch of the season.

Edwards’ Future

As for Edwards, he is expected to clear waivers, particularly given the limited time left in the season. With a week remaining, it’s unlikely any team will claim him, allowing him the opportunity to explore free agency in the offseason. The former World Series champion will likely seek a new opportunity to continue his professional career elsewhere.

Looking Ahead

The Rangers’ decision reflects the tightrope teams walk between roster management and the pursuit of success as they navigate the complexities of the MLB season. With Mahle back in the fold, Texas aims to strengthen its pitching lineup, while Edwards prepares for the next chapter of his journey in baseball.
