Tampa Bay Rays Make Surprising Move, DFA Former A’s Fan Favorite Garrett Acton

In a surprising turn of events, the Tampa Bay Rays have designated Garrett Acton for assignment, a move that has left many fans scratching their heads. Acton, a right-handed pitcher who briefly donned the green and gold for the Oakland Athletics, became a beloved figure during his time in the A’s clubhouse, known for his infectious smile and easygoing nature.

A Brief but Memorable Tenure in Oakland

Acton’s journey in Oakland may not have been long, but it certainly made an impression. He was more than just a player; he resonated with fans on a personal level. His ability to connect with supporters was evident every time he stepped onto the field or engaged with fans in the stands. Whether it was the thrill of a game or a casual chat in the clubhouse, Acton brought a sense of warmth that many cherished.

In December 2022, the Rays took a chance on Acton, claiming him off waivers as he was recovering from surgery. The organization invested significant resources into his rehabilitation, demonstrating their commitment to his recovery. However, after one brief appearance in the majors this season—where he pitched a scoreless inning—Acton found himself back in Triple-A Durham, where he posted a solid 3.68 ERA over 58 2/3 innings.

Challenges on the Mound

Despite his potential, Acton has faced challenges during his time in the big leagues. Across seven appearances, he has struggled with command issues, accumulating a 10.80 ERA in 6 2/3 innings of work, with five strikeouts and seven walks. His ability to hit the mid-90s with his fastball and his effectiveness with a changeup show that he still possesses a solid arm, which could attract interest from teams looking for bullpen depth.

Though he is not yet a free agent, the possibility of signing a minor-league deal with the Rays remains open. Acton has two options left, providing flexibility for teams to shuttle him between the major and minor leagues as they assess his development.

Roster Changes and Future Prospects

The Rays made several roster moves in conjunction with Acton’s DFA, including designating right-handers Alex Faedo, Cole Wilcox, and Joey Gerber. These decisions were aimed at clearing space on the 40-man roster, especially with players returning from the 60-day injured list. Gerber has since been traded to the New York Mets, illustrating the ongoing shifts within the Rays’ organization.

Currently, the Rays’ roster sits at 41 players, and the team continues to navigate the complexities of roster management as they aim to strengthen their lineup for the remainder of the season. The decision to part ways with Acton may have surprised many, but it reflects the ever-evolving nature of a team aiming for success.

As Acton moves forward, his journey remains a testament to the unpredictability of baseball, where one moment can bring a wave of nostalgia and the next, a call for new opportunities.
