Tampa Bay Rays’ Drew Rasmussen Trade Buzz Intensifies

As the offseason approaches, the Tampa Bay Rays are drawing attention for their potential moves in the trade market. Known for transforming established players into long-term assets, the Rays could be poised to make significant waves, especially if they decide to entertain offers for All-Star pitcher Drew Rasmussen.

Ownership Changes Spark New Possibilities

With a new ownership group at the helm, the Rays may be on the brink of a financial evolution. The prospect of a new stadium set to open in 2029 could usher in fresh revenue streams, potentially allowing the Rays to increase spending in free agency. Even without a budget expansion, the team’s track record of identifying young talent and trading them for substantial returns remains a cornerstone of their strategy.

This offseason, players such as designated hitter Yandy Díaz, second baseman Brandon Lowe, and closer Pete Fairbanks have all been mentioned as potential trade bait. However, it’s Rasmussen, a pitcher who has quietly built an impressive resume, who could yield the most significant return.

Drew Rasmussen: An Under-the-Radar Asset

Rasmussen, who has flown under the radar nationally, has been a consistently valuable presence on the mound for the Rays. Acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in the trade for Willy Adames, he has enjoyed two seasons with at least 3.1 bWAR since solidifying his role as a starting pitcher in 2022.

While he may not be the first name that comes to mind when discussing elite pitchers, his statistics speak volumes. In his 103 appearances for the Rays, which includes 81 starts, Rasmussen boasts a remarkable 2.73 ERA, 382 strikeouts, and an impressive bWAR of 11.2. Notably, the only season he has posted an ERA above 2.84 was in his debut year in 2020.

Financial Considerations Add to Trade Value

Rasmussen’s contract, which will pay him $5.75 million in 2026, includes a team option exceeding $10 million for 2027, contingent on making at least 28 starts next season. This affordability, combined with his solid track record, makes him an enticing target for teams seeking to bolster their pitching staff.

The market for pitchers like Rasmussen is projected to be lucrative. Similar to Michael King, who drew considerable interest in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees, Rasmussen’s market value could reach upwards of $91.9 million over four years. Given his age and superior starting experience, Rasmussen could command a deal that rivals or exceeds that of King.

Rays’ Historical Success and Future Outlook

Rasmussen’s stellar performance this season positions him among the best pitchers in Rays history. As the team contemplates its strategy for the offseason, the possibility of trading a player with such a strong track record, while still under contract for a manageable sum, could be too enticing to pass up.

With the Rays’ history of turning trades into triumphs, the buzz surrounding Drew Rasmussen is just the beginning of what could be a transformative offseason for the franchise. Teams across the league will undoubtedly be watching closely, ready to pounce should the Rays make their All-Star pitcher available.
