Cardinals Open Trade Floodgates Amidst Veteran Shakeup

The St. Louis Cardinals are poised to make significant changes as they enter the offseason, with trade discussions swirling around nearly every veteran on their roster. While much of the spotlight has been on star players like Nolan Arenado and Sonny Gray, the Cardinals’ willingness to engage in trade talks extends well beyond these two.

Broader Trade Discussions

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch recently reported that the Cardinals have already received inquiries about several players, including Lars Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan. This proactive approach signals a shift in the club’s strategy as they evaluate their roster and consider opportunities for improvement.

“They have already fielded interest in Lars Nootbaar and Brendan Donovan, and they will consider hearing offers from them,” Goold noted. This openness reflects the Cardinals’ intent to explore all options, including potential trades involving younger players like Nolan Gorman and Alec Burleson.

Evaluating Timelines and Returns

The Cardinals’ decision-making process will hinge on the returns they receive in any potential deals. The organization may prioritize players like Burleson, who they view as fitting better into their competitive timeline, over others like Donovan or Nootbaar, who are approaching free agency. This strategic consideration indicates a forward-thinking mindset as the Cardinals aim to reshape their roster for both the immediate and distant future.

Catching Position Under Review

In addition to outfield and infield trades, the Cardinals are also evaluating their options behind the plate. There is interest from other teams regarding their catching depth, but the organization is keen to provide Iván Herrera with ample opportunity during spring training to establish himself as a viable option. The outcome of this evaluation will undoubtedly influence their approach to any trade discussions concerning catchers.

As the winter progresses, the Cardinals are set to become a focal point in the trade market, with various teams likely to engage them in discussions about their veteran talent. The coming months will be crucial for St. Louis as they navigate this pivotal period, aiming to capitalize on their assets while laying the groundwork for a stronger future.
