Sox’s playoff dreams hinge on missed opportunity with Zac Gallen as trade deadline deals unravel in Boston

Date:

Sox’s Playoff Aspirations Diminished by Missed Trade for Zac Gallen

The Boston Red Sox found themselves at a crossroads at the trade deadline, ultimately making minimal moves that could impact their postseason ambitions. Their only acquisitions were reliever Steven Matz and starter Dustin May, following their unsuccessful pursuit of Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan. However, in a turn of events that has left fans pondering, the Red Sox also had their sights set on another All-Star pitcher: Zac Gallen of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

A Trade That Almost Happened

Reporting from Tim Healey and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe suggests that the Red Sox were making strides in negotiations for Gallen. The talks, however, hit a snag when the Diamondbacks demanded more than the Red Sox were willing to part with. The Diamondbacks sought a return that exceeded the value of a compensation pick they would receive if Gallen were to leave as a free agent after the season.

The Red Sox, like many contenders, were exploring options for right-handed starters. They expressed a readiness to include left-handed pitcher Brandon Clarke in a potential deal. Yet, the situation soured when Arizona insisted on adding lefty Connelly Early—a highly regarded prospect currently excelling in Triple-A—to the package. This request proved too steep for Boston’s front office, leading to a missed opportunity.

Gallen’s Impact Since the Deadline

Since the trade deadline, Gallen has continued to shine on the mound, boasting a remarkable 2.20 ERA with a 4-1 record over seven starts and 41 innings pitched. His performance underscores just how critical this missed trade could prove for the Red Sox as they strive for playoff contention. In stark contrast, May has struggled to find his footing, posting a 5.40 ERA across five starts, resulting in a disappointing 1-4 record.

The Future of Connelly Early

Connelly Early, the left-handed pitcher at the center of the trade discussions, is currently ranked as the sixth overall prospect in the Red Sox farm system and stands as their third-best lefty. His impressive showing in Triple-A has raised speculation about a possible promotion to the major leagues. With the Red Sox needing all the reinforcement they can muster as they navigate the stretch run towards the playoffs, Early’s potential call-up could be a silver lining in an otherwise frustrating trade season.

Looking Ahead

As the Red Sox grapple with their current roster and the implications of missed opportunities at the trade deadline, the team remains in a precarious position. The performance of their pitchers, particularly in the wake of Gallen’s success and May’s struggles, will be pivotal as Boston aims to secure a playoff spot. With their eyes set on the postseason, the Red Sox must navigate these challenges carefully as they seek to solidify their standing in a competitive race.
