Sonny Gray ignites Red Sox-Yankees rivalry: “Easy to hate the Yankees”

Sonny Gray Stirs the Pot in Red Sox-Yankees Rivalry

The anticipation is palpable as Sonny Gray steps into the limelight of one of baseball’s most storied rivalries. Upon his arrival in Boston following a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, Gray faced the local media, marking his first formal introduction since rejoining the American League East. The three-time All-Star is preparing to dive back into the fray against the New York Yankees, a team he is all too familiar with.

A Familiar Foe

Gray’s return to the AL East brings with it the weight of his past experiences in pinstripes. The pitcher, who has donned the uniforms of five Major League Baseball teams, shared his sentiments candidly. “It feels good to me to go to a place where it’s easy to hate the Yankees,” he remarked, echoing the sentiments of many in Red Sox Nation. His history with the Yankees was marked by struggles; during his time in New York, he registered a 4.51 ERA—his highest among all his MLB stops.

Reflecting on his Yankees Tenure

Gray’s tenure with the Yankees was fraught with challenges, leaving him with a bitter taste. According to reports, he admitted, “I never wanted to go to New York in the first place.” Acquired from the Oakland Athletics in a high-profile trade just before the 2017 trade deadline, Gray’s performance fluctuated. He finished his first season in New York with a 4.72 ERA over 11 regular-season starts and made two appearances in the postseason. However, the following year proved disastrous, as he ended the season with an 11-9 record and a troubling 4.90 ERA. This led to his relegation to the bullpen and eventual departure from the franchise after the 2018 season.

Navigating Pressure in the Spotlight

As Gray embarks on this new chapter in Boston, questions loom regarding his ability to handle the pressures of playing in another demanding market. The echoes of his past struggles in New York serve as a backdrop to his fresh start with the Red Sox. Yet, if his comments are any indication, Gray appears ready to embrace the rivalry head-on. With the stakes as high as ever, fans on both sides eagerly await the unfolding drama between these two iconic teams.
