Season of Second Chances

Garrett Acton’s Journey Back to the Majors with the Tampa Bay Rays

In a season filled with ups and downs, the Tampa Bay Rays are ready to turn the page on a promising chapter in their bullpen with the addition of Garrett Acton. The 27-year-old right-hander, whose path to the majors has been anything but straightforward, represents a beacon of hope as the Rays look to breathe new life into their campaign.

A Long Road to the Big Leagues

Acton’s story begins in 2020, a year that saw him go undrafted in a truncated five-round draft. Undeterred, he signed with the Oakland Athletics in June. His ascent through the minor leagues was swift, showcasing his talent as he navigated through the levels of A Ball during his debut season in 2021. By the following year, he had climbed the ranks all the way to Triple-A, demonstrating the resilience and skill that would eventually earn him a shot in the big leagues.

On Mother’s Day in 2023, Acton made his major league debut against the Texas Rangers, a moment that he had long dreamed of. He dazzled in his first outing, tossing 1 2/3 innings without allowing a hit or a run and striking out two batters. The debut was not just a personal triumph; it was a culmination of years of hard work and perseverance.

A Mother’s Day Surprise

The day of his debut held special significance. Acton had planned to buy a hat for his mother to celebrate the occasion when his manager delivered the unexpected news: he was headed to the majors. “I was going to pick out a hat for my mom,” Acton recalled, reflecting on the moment that would change his life. “But then I was told to get an A’s hat instead.”

His time with the Athletics, however, was short-lived. Over a span of six games, Acton pitched 5 2/3 innings but faced challenges in his final outings against the Houston Astros, allowing seven runs in just one inning. This performance led to a demotion back to the minors, where he would encounter further setbacks.

Facing Adversity Head-On

Shortly after being optioned, Acton was placed on the 7-day injured list and eventually released by the A’s. The setback was compounded by the need for Tommy John surgery, a procedure that would sideline him significantly. Yet, in December of 2023, the Rays took a chance on him, signing him to a minor-league deal.

Acton’s journey back to the mound was arduous. Although he did not pitch in any games during the 2024 season, his determination never wavered. The beginning of the current season marks a significant turning point for him, as he prepares to showcase his skills once more in the big leagues.

A New Chapter with the Rays

With the Rays’ season nearing its conclusion, they have opted to call up Acton as a feel-good story for their stretch run. In a corresponding move, Eric Orze was optioned to Triple-A Durham, making way for Acton’s return.

As he dons the Rays uniform, the hope is that Acton can replicate the promise he showed during his debut and carve out a niche in the Rays’ bullpen. His journey is a testament to resilience, a reminder that sometimes, second chances can lead to remarkable opportunities.

Garrett Acton’s story is one of determination, family ties, and the relentless pursuit of a dream. As he steps back into the spotlight, all eyes will be on him to see if he can seize this moment and write the next chapter in his evolving career.
