Giants Eyeing Ketel Marte as Trade Deadline Approaches
As the trade deadline approaches, the San Francisco Giants find themselves in a race against time to acquire Ketel Marte from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The urgency is palpable, as Arizona general manager Mike Hazen has indicated that interested teams should act swiftly. Marte’s Contract and No-Trade Clause
Ketel Marte is currently in the second year of a six-year, $116 million deal with the Diamondbacks. An important factor in any trade is that Marte is nearing the eligibility for 10-5 rights, which would grant him the ability to veto any trade should he choose to do so. These rights come into effect on the 10th day of the regular season, adding another layer of complexity to the Giants’ pursuit.
Hazen has expressed a desire to shift focus to other offseason priorities, making it clear that a swift resolution is important. For the Giants, acquiring a player of Marte’s caliber would fill a significant need at second base, but the path forward is fraught with challenges.
Financial Considerations and Trade Hurdles
If the Giants decide to pursue Marte, they would likely need to absorb the entirety of his contract, as Arizona is not expected to contribute financially to the deal. President of baseball operations Buster Posey has already committed substantial resources, including $182 million to shortstop Willy Adames and a significant portion of Rafael Devers’ $330 million contract inherited from Boston. While Marte could be viewed as a relative bargain in this context, his acquisition would mean that every infielder for the Giants would be on a nine-figure contract.
Additionally, Marte’s limited no-trade clause complicates matters further. As part of his contract, he has the right to refuse trades to five teams, which includes the Giants, adding leverage to his position. Should Marte choose to waive this clause, it could elevate the asking price for the trade, complicating negotiations even more.
