Ryne Nelson Emerges as Diamondbacks’ Ace
As the Arizona Diamondbacks turn their attention to bolstering their pitching staff this offseason, one pitcher stands out as a keystone of their rotation. Ryne Nelson has firmly established himself as the team’s most effective starter and is a prime candidate for a contract extension.
Nelson’s Dominance Since July 2024
Ryne Nelson has proven to be the backbone of the Diamondbacks’ pitching efforts over the past year and a half. Since July 1, 2024, he has not only posted the lowest earned run average (ERA) among D-backs starters but has also showcased superior peripheral and expected statistics compared to his peers. This includes key metrics like expected ERA (xERA) and Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP), both of which highlight Nelson’s ability to control the game on the mound.
To put his performance into perspective, xERA estimates what a pitcher’s ERA should be based on the quality of contact as well as actual walks and strikeouts. FIP, on the other hand, focuses solely on the elements a pitcher can directly influence: walks, strikeouts, and home runs allowed, effectively taking defensive performance out of the equation.
A Rollercoaster Ride in the Rotation
Despite a stellar second half in 2024, Nelson faced challenges when the team signed veteran Corbin Burnes in the offseason, which led to his demotion to a long relief role. The Diamondbacks opted to keep Brandon Pfaadt in the rotation, leaving veterans Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Eduardo Rodriguez healthy and occupying starting spots.
As Nelson navigated his new role, he made only a handful of spot starts while primarily toiling in the bullpen. However, everything changed on June 1 when Burnes suffered an elbow injury that would necessitate Tommy John surgery. This unfortunate turn of events opened the door for Nelson to reclaim his position as the team’s most reliable starter.
Looking Ahead
With the offseason on the horizon, it’s clear that Ryne Nelson’s contributions to the Diamondbacks cannot be overlooked. His journey from a long reliever to the ace of the staff underscores his resilience and talent. The organization would do well to consider an extension for Nelson, ensuring that they retain one of their most valuable assets as they look to strengthen their pitching lineup for the future.
