Rays Set Their Sights on Zack Littell’s Return
As the Tampa Bay Rays prepare for the offseason, their focus is on shoring up several positions within their roster. While catcher, shortstop, and outfield have been highlighted as primary areas for improvement by Erik Neander, the team’s president of baseball operations, a less conspicuous need looms on the pitching front.
Addressing the Pitching Rotation
With veteran starter Adrian Houser poised to enter free agency, the Rays must evaluate their options for bolstering a rotation that could benefit from additional depth. Houser’s performance since joining the team has been underwhelming compared to his time with the Chicago White Sox, yet his affordability could make him an option for the Rays if they choose to re-sign him.
However, another familiar face could be on the table: Zack Littell. The right-handed pitcher, who was traded to the Cincinnati Reds before the trade deadline, is also set to become a free agent. His previous stint with Tampa Bay has left a lasting impression, making him a candidate for a reunion.
Potential Contract Expectations
What might it take for the Rays to bring Littell back into the fold? According to Jim Bowden, a former MLB executive, a one-year contract valued at around $10 million seems plausible. Bowden’s analysis references comparable salary structures from recent signings, including one-year deals for pitchers like Michael Soroka and Aaron Civale, who inked contracts worth $9 million and $8 million, respectively.
Additionally, Bowden pointed to multi-year contracts for hurlers such as Clay Holmes, Tyler Mahle, and German Marquez, whose annual averages hover around $12.67 million, $11 million, and $10 million. Given these figures, a $10 million deal for Littell appears not only reasonable but also a strategic move for the Rays as they seek to reinforce their pitching staff.
A Strategic Move for the Rays
Reuniting with Littell could provide the Rays with a reliable option to fill the void left by Houser. If he can replicate the effectiveness he displayed during his previous tenure in Tampa Bay, the investment would likely pay off. As the offseason unfolds, all eyes will be on how the Rays navigate the free agency landscape and whether they opt to bring back a familiar arm in Littell.
