Rangers Call on Veteran Carl Edwards Jr. for Bullpen Boost
The Texas Rangers are bolstering their bullpen as they enter a critical stretch in September, marked by a showdown against the Houston Astros and a looming series with the Milwaukee Brewers. In a strategic move, the team has turned to veteran reliever Carl Edwards Jr. to add depth and experience to their pitching staff.
Edwards Returns to the Big Leagues
After a lengthy absence from Major League action, Carl Edwards Jr. is set to make his return. The right-hander hasn’t stepped onto a big league mound since April, spending the summer with Triple-A Round Rock. However, with the Rangers facing crucial games, manager Bruce Bochy announced on Sunday that Edwards’ contract has been selected, bringing him back into the fold for the final game of the series against the Astros.
As Edwards traveled to Arlington, he expressed his readiness to contribute. The urgency for a reliable arm has heightened as the Rangers gear up for their playoff push. “He’s an experienced right-hander,” Bochy noted, highlighting Edwards’ decade-long career in the majors, which has been ongoing since 2015.
A Familiar Face in the Organization
Edwards isn’t just another name on the roster; he has a connection to the Rangers’ organization, having been drafted by them in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB draft. His familiarity with the team could prove beneficial as he reintegrates into the bullpen.
In preparation for Edwards’ arrival, the Rangers designated reliever Caleb Boushley for assignment. Boushley made 25 appearances this season, including one start, but struggled with a 6.02 ERA over 43.1 innings, managing to strike out 41 batters. The team may still have the option to send him back to Triple-A if he clears waivers, maintaining flexibility within their pitching ranks.
Strategic Timing for a Key Addition
With the stakes rising, the Rangers are keenly aware of the importance of having a fully stocked bullpen. The decision to call up Edwards indicates a commitment to fortifying their team as they navigate this pivotal month. As the Rangers continue to fight for postseason positioning, the addition of a seasoned pitcher like Edwards could provide the stability they need in high-pressure situations.
As the Texas Rangers look ahead, they hope that Edwards will deliver the kind of performance that can help propel them through a challenging September.
