Pirates Make Waves in Offseason Trades
The Pittsburgh Pirates have been anything but quiet this offseason, making significant roster changes that could set the stage for a competitive season ahead. With several strategic moves already under their belt, the Pirates are poised to make even more adjustments as they look to enhance their lineup.
Key Trades Shake Up the Roster
Recently, the Pirates orchestrated a notable three-team trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, acquiring power-hitting second baseman Brandon Lowe, outfielder Jake Mangum, and left-handed pitcher Mason Montgomery. This deal, which took place on December 19, also saw the Pirates part ways with right-handed starting pitcher Mike Burrows, sending him to the Houston Astros.
Additionally, the Pirates added to their young talent pool by bringing in top-100 prospect Jhostynxon García from the Boston Red Sox on December 4. In this exchange, they sent right-handed starter Johan Oviedo to Boston, further solidifying their commitment to building a competitive future.
A New Signing in the Fold
In a move to bolster their offensive lineup, the Pirates signed Ryan O’Hearn to a two-year, $29 million contract, marking their first free-agent position player acquisition of the offseason. O’Hearn’s addition not only brings depth to the roster but also signals the Pirates’ intention to invest in capable hitters moving forward.
Looking Ahead to Free Agency
Despite these promising additions, the Pirates are not done yet. Robert Murray, a baseball insider, addressed the team’s future moves during an appearance on Foul Territory on December 22. He emphasized the significance of the Lowe acquisition while hinting at the potential for further enhancements through free agency.
Murray highlighted three players who could be on the Pirates’ radar: Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto, designated hitter Marcell Ozuna, and O’Hearn, prior to his signing. “Now you can look at it from a couple different ways here through free agency,” Murray stated. “You spend on Okamoto, you go after Ryan O’Hearn, or do you spend and try and get a guy like Marcell Ozuna. To me, all three of those guys are on the table in Pittsburgh.”
As the offseason progresses, the Pirates remain active, navigating trades and free agency to refine their roster. With the potential to secure impactful players, Pittsburgh is setting its sights on a more formidable lineup for the upcoming season.
