Pittsburgh Pirates prepare for Spring Training with seven non-roster invitees
The Pittsburgh Pirates are already looking ahead to next season, with less than two months until the start of Spring Training. The organization recently unveiled a list of seven players who will be non-roster invitees to the major league camp in February. Among these invitees are three position players and four pitchers, all aiming to make a significant impression as they vie for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Position Players to Watch
The trio of position players includes outfielders Ronny Simon and Dominic Fletcher, along with infielder Davis Wendzel. Simon, an intriguing addition, was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins on June 2, shortly after the Pirates designated him for assignment. During his time with Indianapolis, Simon showcased his potential, posting an impressive line of .291/.386/.447, resulting in an OPS of .833 over 52 games. His offensive contributions included 60 hits in 206 at-bats, nine doubles, one triple, seven home runs, and 30 RBIs, complemented by an eye-catching 32 walks against 40 strikeouts, along with 24 stolen bases out of 30 attempts.
After his strong showing in the minors, Simon was recalled to the Pirates on August 13 to fill the gap left by Oneil Cruz, who was placed on the seven-day concussion list. However, his MLB debut was challenging; Simon slashed .233/.250/.267 for an OPS of .517 in just seven games, accumulating seven hits in 30 at-bats, including one double, two RBIs, and one walk, while striking out eight times. Unfortunately, his season ended prematurely when he dislocated his shoulder during a game against the Boston Red Sox on August 29, necessitating surgery on a torn labrum. The recovery period is projected to last between four to six months, with hopes of a return between February and April 2026.
Pitchers Making Their Case
On the mound, the Pirates have brought in right-handers Beau Burrows and Noah Murdock, alongside left-handers Joe La Sorsa and Oddanier Mosqueda. Each of these pitchers is on minor league contracts, but their performances during Spring Training could be pivotal in shaping the pitching staff for the upcoming season.
Burrows, a former top prospect, has the potential to reinforce the Pirates’ rotation, while Murdock’s recent development has shown promise. La Sorsa and Mosqueda, both left-handed options, add depth to a bullpen that could benefit from varied pitching styles.
As the Pirates approach Spring Training, the competition among these non-roster invitees will undoubtedly intensify. Each player will be eager to secure their place in the lineup and contribute to the team’s aspirations for the upcoming season. With a blend of talent and determination, the stage is set for a captivating camp in February.
