Phillies Take a Chance on Walker Buehler as He Aims for Redemption in Crucial Postseason Run

Weeks ago, Walker Buehler found himself in an unexpected position, being released by the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander, once heralded as a key asset, fell short of expectations in Boston, posting a 7-7 record and a 5.45 ERA over 23 appearances. His tenure with the Red Sox ended in disappointment, but a new opportunity emerged when the Philadelphia Phillies signed him to a minor league contract shortly after his release.

Buehler’s Quick Transition to the Phillies

With Zack Wheeler sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Phillies recognized a pressing need to reinforce their starting rotation. Buehler made his minor league debut with Philadelphia this past Saturday and is now set for a pivotal start against the Kansas City Royals on Friday. Facing a lineup featuring the likes of Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino, this outing represents a significant test for Buehler as he seeks to reclaim his former form.

Roster Adjustments Ahead of Buehler’s Debut

In preparation for Buehler’s debut, the Phillies announced several roster moves that reflect their commitment to bolstering their pitching staff. According to MLB Trade Rumors, the team has selected Buehler’s contract while placing Jose Alvarado on the 15-day injured list and designating Matt Manning for assignment. This marks the second time this season that Manning has faced DFA; he was previously designated by the Detroit Tigers ahead of the trade deadline. Now, he will be on the lookout for another chance in what promises to be a competitive offseason for free-agent pitchers.

Postseason Potential for Buehler

Crucially, Buehler’s signing before the September 1st deadline allows him to be eligible for postseason play. Should he manage to minimize the mistakes that plagued him in Boston, he could emerge as a significant contributor to the Phillies’ playoff aspirations. As the team gears up for a crucial stretch, all eyes will be on Buehler to see if he can rise to the occasion and help propel the Phillies in their pursuit of postseason success.
