Phillies’ postseason strategy could feature Johan Rojas as a secret weapon with speed and defense for late-inning heroics

Phillies Eye Johan Rojas as a Potential Secret Weapon for Postseason Success

The Philadelphia Phillies are set for another October run, clinching a spot in the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. Having secured the National League East title for the second straight season, they find themselves in a position to potentially nab a first-round bye. As they gear up for the playoffs, the Phillies are contemplating strategic roster adjustments that could enhance their chances for success.

Roster Adjustments on the Horizon

To fine-tune their postseason roster, the Phillies are considering a creative approach that involves carrying fewer pitchers. With key players like Trea Turner, Alec Bohm, and Edmundo Sosa poised to return, the Phillies might look to bolster their lineup with an intriguing addition from the minors.

Matt Gelb has highlighted the possibility of the Phillies opting for a 12-pitcher, 14-position player configuration. This could open the door for one particular name: outfielder Johan Rojas.

Johan Rojas: The Dark Horse Candidate

Gelb notes the appeal of adding Rojas to the postseason roster. His elite speed and defensive prowess make him an ideal candidate for late-game scenarios, regardless of his batting performance. “It makes sense to consider Johan Rojas,” Gelb remarked, emphasizing the unique advantages Rojas could bring in high-pressure moments.

Rojas, who previously held the starting center field position, now finds himself in a more versatile role. Rob Thomson, the Phillies’ manager, could utilize Rojas not only for his speed but also to shore up the outfield defensively in crucial late innings. With Harrison Bader expected to take on everyday center field duties, the outfield will feature a rotation of Max Kepler, Brandon Marsh, Nick Castellanos, and Weston Wilson in the corners.

Strategic Utilization in Late Innings

What makes Rojas particularly valuable is his potential role as a defensive substitution for Castellanos or as a pinch runner when speed is essential on the basepaths. Unlike previous seasons where he needed to start regularly, Rojas can now focus purely on maximizing his strengths in specific situations.

His minor league performance adds to his case, as Rojas is currently batting .280 with a .695 OPS at Triple-A. While he may lack power, his ability to make contact and utilize his speed could lead to valuable offensive contributions when needed.

A Proven Asset in October

Rojas is no stranger to the postseason spotlight, having previously demonstrated his capabilities in playoff settings. With 71 games played earlier this season with the Phillies, he has the experience and skill set that could prove vital as the team navigates the challenges of October baseball.

As the postseason approaches, the potential for Rojas to be called up remains a topic of interest. His role as a specialized player could add an intriguing dynamic to the Phillies’ roster, making him a secret weapon in their pursuit of postseason success.
