Padres’ past error becomes Cubs’ triumph as Anthony Rizzo retires after stellar MLB journey

Rizzo’s Retirement Marks End of a Remarkable Journey

Anthony Rizzo, the former first baseman for the San Diego Padres, has announced his retirement after a celebrated 14-year career in Major League Baseball. Known for his power hitting and leadership, Rizzo’s career trajectory is a story of resilience and redemption, particularly highlighted by his time with the Chicago Cubs.

A Pivotal Trade in History

The story of Rizzo’s career began in October 2009 when the Padres hired Jed Hoyer, a former executive with the Boston Red Sox, as their general manager. Just two months later, Hoyer orchestrated a significant trade, acquiring Rizzo as part of a deal that sent Adrian Gonzalez to Boston. However, Rizzo’s initial stint in San Diego was challenging. In his rookie season in 2011, the then 21-year-old played just 49 games, hitting a dismal .141 with one home run.

The narrative took a dramatic turn in January 2012 when Hoyer, now the general manager of the Cubs, traded for Rizzo, sending pitcher Andrew Cashner to San Diego in return. This trade is often recalled by Padres fans as one of the most regrettable decisions in the franchise’s history. While many outside the cities of San Diego and Chicago may have forgotten the details, the impact of this trade is still felt today.

A Fond Farewell

Rizzo shared the news of his retirement via an Instagram post, reminiscing about his journey. He included a nostalgic clip of his first major league at-bat with the Padres, highlighting the call of his inaugural home run—an achievement that feels distant, given his later success. Over his career, Rizzo accumulated 242 home runs with the Cubs from 2012 to 2021, followed by 60 with the New York Yankees from 2021 to 2024, compared to just one home run during his time in San Diego.

Reflecting on the trade that brought him to Chicago, Hoyer expressed regret during a press conference, noting, “To be candid, I don’t think I did Anthony any favors when I was the GM of the Padres. We called him up because we weren’t getting any first base production in San Diego. It was too early, and a mistake on my part.”

Rizzo’s own sentiments echoed this sentiment, as he acknowledged the challenges he faced early in his career. “I wouldn’t say some people wrote me off, but some people I guess lost some faith in me,” he stated. “For them to still have that faith, with everything they helped me through, it just shows me how loyal they are and how honored I am to play for them.”

A Legacy in Baseball

Rizzo’s accomplishments extended well beyond individual statistics. He was recognized as an All-Star in the National League from 2014 to 2016 and received Gold Glove Awards in 2016 and 2018. Most notably, he played a crucial role in helping the Cubs break their 108-year World Series drought in 2016, marking a monumental chapter in baseball history with back-to-back seasons of 32 home runs and 109 RBIs—both career highs.

His baseball journey culminated with a return to the World Series last year with the Yankees, though he did not secure a contract for the upcoming season. As Rizzo steps away from the game, he leaves behind a legacy defined by perseverance, transformation, and a deep connection with the cities he represented.
